Sounds Like: When you get a Radio One Session with Mike Davies after a year together you must be doing something very, very right. Such is the case with Londoners The Apostates, who got together in the hazy summer days of 2006 to start kicking out soulful ska punk tunes with a side order of surf licks. London and proud of it, The Apostates stick two fingers up at those English bands who put on fake American accents, injecting their two EPs 'Junkyard Dogs & Alley Cats' and 'Same Old Sound' with a hefty dose of Britishness as well as some supremely dirty ska. With songs 'Same Old Sound' and 'Off My Life' to be feathured in the upcoming 'NHL 2k8' video game, things are certainly looking up for this hotly-tipped trio.
Big Cheese Magazine - September 2007
With some bands you need a clean, crisp, poppy production quality to make the music work; most of the bands on labels like Fat Wreck, Victory and Fueled By Ramen are prime examples. While The Apostates' music initially struck me as the kind of music that would benefit from a well-produced quality to their music, I soon came to quite enjoy their rawness and primitivity because the frequencies that are lacking from the guitars are punched through with the distorted vocals, fattening out the sound a treat. The bass guitar also stands out and makes the lights on my CD player dance the same happy dance as when it is adorned with Rancid. What we've got here is moody punk and dirty ska licks and riffs, iced with very British style vocals forcing out a phenomenal number of words to get your head round, as a result the choruses don't always stick in your head but are nonetheless very enjoyable. And this is perhaps the main feature of The Apostates that will carry them through to success, as they are original and characteristic and make this CD definitely worth checking out.

Fresh from radio one, The Apostates top the bill tonight, with their loud, brash, crazy crass sound. The singer has a growling, loud voice that is angry, and complemented by backing vocals from the other two members a very punky sound is produced. Bass rings out loud, clear and crunchy while drums bash away solidly. They're very punk - what with the short sharp delivery of the songs and the raw stripped sound of a three piece - but there's a more accessible side too, which shows upbeat melodies, ska rhythms and catchy choruses. All in all a neat little act that give a great live performance.
