After a string of accomplishments in her early life—an apprenticeship with a jewelry maker in high school, graduating from college with honors, a job as a sales manager for a large international hotel chain, to name a few—she found her journey wasn’t really a journey at all, but a stifling and endless routine of traffic jams, corporate business meetings, the endless hum and rattle of the city in which she lived: an artificial and plastic world. Like so many Americans her age, her successes were many, her dreams were big, but her satisfaction was small. The Universe, Lindsey believes, speaks to us all, and it spoke to her one day in an unlikely way: through a pedicurist who, when Lindsey complained of not being happy with her job or place, said simply, "Go to Mexico." And she did.
There she immersed herself into the culture, the traditions, the mystery. She found beauty in everything—the lush and verdant foliage, the striking colors of the houses and architecture, the smells of the open markets, the simple and rustic charm of everyday life. Art in Mexico arises from a mixture of history, tradition, religion, and spirituality—and it was this mixture that Lindsey noticed was mostly absent from the world of mass marketing and high dollar advertising. She found local artisans who pooled material from everyday life to create beautiful purses, jewelry, and accessories—each peace reflecting the magic of Mexico and imbued with an artistic spirit that can only be infused by the hands of the artisanos themselves.
It was this artistic spirit that Lindsey wished to bring home. She decided to renovate a historic building owned by four generations of her family in downtown Edna, Texas. The business, named Fireflies, offers furniture, accessories, and gifts, and features the hand-crafted wares of Gringas & Co. All are invited to come browse eclectic purses and bags, hand-crafted jewelry, and a variety of accessories that are the result of the tradition and spirit of the place from which they com.
