Sean Joell JohnsonSean Joell Johnson is Principle of LeftCenter Entertainment LLC, a film and television production concern. LeftCenter currently has a production deal with BET Networks in which Johnson oversees Programming Strategy for BET J and executive produces a number of television series for the network.
Johnson was a key architect in transitioning the former ‘BET Jazz’ into ‘BET J’ creating the Programming Philosphy and Strategy for the network. The former BET Jazz was re-launched in March 2006 as music and lifestyle channel featuring Jazz in the day and Lifestyle Programming and Classic Soul/Rhythm & Blues in Primetime. Johnson also continues to pitch compelling television projects to other networks including MTV, Spike, Bravo, Comedy Central, VH1 and others.
Recently Johnson also served as an Associate Producer of the 20th Century Fox Faith/Codeblack film, Dirty Laundry, which will be released in Summer 2007, an ABFF Audience Award Winner – written and directed by Maurice Jamal, the film stars Rockmond Dunbar, Loretta Divine, Sommore and Veronica Webb.
Prior to his deal at BET, Johnson had a ‘first look’ production deal with MTV Networks. As part of that deal Johnson acted as Head of Production & Development for TEMPO (gottempo.com), MTV Networks’ new channel focusing exclusively on Caribbean music, history and culture. Johnson had been involved in creating and developing the network from its inception. Series and Specials he executive produced for the network include Caribbean Rising, Tempo Live & Direct (A 2 1/2 hour music extravaganza taped on over six islands, with 60+ musical acts including Wyclef John, Beres Hammond, Jimmy Cliff, Rupee, Rihanna and more), and Downtown Island. During this time Johnson also successfully placed television projects at VH1, MTV and E!.
Before launching LeftCenter, Johnson was Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs for MTV. At MTV, Johnson was responsible for structuring, negotiating and drafting agreements for the MTV Music Development, News and Production departments. Johnson negotiated the deals for several of MTV’s biggest hits including The Osbournes, Punk’d, True Life, and Pimp My Ride and oversaw all of MTV Production's business and legal affairs matters including the MTV Video Music Awards, MTV Movie Awards and MTV Spring Break.
Prior to MTV, Johnson was Associate General Counsel for Black Entertainment Television handling the legal work for BET's magazine division, film concerns and music publishing companies. Johnson also researched, drafted, developed and instituted the business plan for BET’s music publishing companies.
Johnson is a member of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and Producers Guild of America. He is also a member of the California Bar Association.
Johnson received his law degree from George Washington University Law School and earned a B.S. at the University of Southern California.
