G Love (G Love & Special Sauce)
Vinnie Vinnie Whitehead, we love you!
Finally, on a positive note, I made one of my better choices in October when attending the ‘Vinnie & The Stars’ single launch at Trash (formerly The Mixing Tin).
I’ll avoid clichés, other than to say that the group’s blend of blues, funk and hip-hop, with notable sprinklings of jazz and ska, was a treat, and proved the frontman, backed by a very solid performance from ‘The Stars’, is one of the most rapidly improving performers in the region. Belting out somewhere in the region of nine songs, including ‘Free Ride’, ‘Day Off’, ‘Spaceship Blues’ and the single itself, ‘Gone’, the boys deserved every decimal of the rapturous appreciation they received from a drunk but knowledgeable crowd.
Already bigged-up by none other than G Love, ("Vinnie has a distinctively original vocal style, the production is raw, and I’m feeling it." - G Love: G Love & Special Sauce), Vinnie (real name Craig) is developing a deserved reputation as being amongst the most passionate, enthusiastic and hard-working musicians in Leeds.
Jack Martin - No-Title Magazine
"Vinnie and the stars" are a completely differing outfit, it's rap and blues rock…for once really, this is something slightly different than anything you will have heard in recent memory. "Time Flies By" incorporates a little jazz and a little bit of ska. This is perhaps what we should be able to call: "real feel good music."Acting as the "Sublime" or "Of A Revolution" for the U.K, Vinnie and The Stars (complete with infectious "get-happy" songs like "Day Off" and the new single "Gone") seem to have mastered the art of creating quality music, that crosses genres and makes people happy. For the most part in these songs the saxophone compliments the steady rock beats, while the vocals slide down our ear holes like a pint of the smoothest... whatever you want. The aforementioned "Day Off" smacks of early Chilli-Peppers if you crossed them with the Gorillaz and a pinch of The Eels added to spice up this wonderfully random concoction.
Dom Smith - The Talk Magazine
Craig Whitehead seems so young but intense and powerful; he sings simple songs about hopes, dreams and youthful ideals. Some are more stretched, suspended and more melancholy (autobiographical) and others sweetly ironic, with bitterness disguised as humour. Combining a strong barrage of chords and percussive strumming, he twists and breaks lyrical phrases over chords and reminds me of jack White in the way he dischords phrases. He's occasionally assisted by Danny Pig with the drum machine that gives more structure and framework to the intense vocals. Strongly executed but raw and emotional, his expression dominates his technique
Sophie Kemp - Sandman Magazine
Craig Whitehead had escaped Leeds to perform a solo acoustic set. Just him and a guitar, he had forgotten, or lost his harmonica. Craig set the jovial tone for the evening by giving us angst ridden songs about lost love, missed opportunities, one night stands, and not having a TV. The songs were performed with style and humour as he comfortably bantered with the audience like a seasoned pro, and his 8 song set was over all too soon
Paul Cunniff - Acomb Music
