Influences: I don't know what that means, exactly, but I am inspired by every and all music. My first inspiration was Captain and Tenille when I was 4 yrs. old, ( Maybe I loved that crazy Cap'n).
I grew up with parents who had records on all the time, so it was no coincedence that I became obsessed with music at a young age. Earliest impressions were, The Stones, Bob Dylan, Linda Ronstadt, Led Zepplin,The Beatles, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell Eric Clapton and my favorite band still, Fleetwood Mac.
Elton John, Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, Joan Armatrading, Cat Stevens and James Taylor. My Mom took me to see Simon and Garfunkel in Central Park when I was 6, and that is one of the best memories I have of childhood. The Smiths, and Journey, another favorite band, pretty much got me through high school. (Sure I listened to Bon Jovi, I'm from Brooklyn, I'll admit it) Other high school band influences were Heart, Edie Brickel, Michael Penn, OMD, Depeche Mode, The Cure, XTC, The Outfield,Suzanne Vega, Cyndi Lauper,Pat Benatar, and of course, yes, Madonna.
On the funk/jazz/blues side, Sly and the Family Stone, Rufus with Chaka, Stevie Wonder (a personal hero),The Rat Pack, Billie Holiday,Peggy Lee, Ella, and Nina Simone. Chet Baker,Doris Day, Miles Davis, Muddy Walters. Lots and Lots of Musicals...show tunes baby...
I'm a huge Hip Hop fan, again the Brooklyn upbringing, it's a must. Earliest loves were The Beastie Boys, BDP, Eric B. and Rakim, Dr. Dre, Grandmaster Flash, Run DMC, LL Cool J and MC Lyte, De La Soul, Slick Rick and Public Enemy.
Love Coldplay, Gavin DeGraw, Keane,Iron and Wine,Inara George, Cat Power,Ray La Montagne, Imogen Heap,Teagan and Sara, The Shins, Over the Rhine, Joshua Radin, Remy Zero,Rachel Yamagata,The Strokes,Bright Eyes, Stars, The Fray,Modest Mouse, Ryan Adams, Jeff Buckley (RIP), and The Best Record of 2005, The Killers, Hot Fuss.
Sounds Like: I hate that....
Not what you'd expect.
