I am here for Friends

About Me

this is so me.. except, more eloquently stated.
my favorite perfume.
"i don't want to be alone, i want to be left alone."
[audrey hepburn]
"the beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. the beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. it is the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows. and the beauty of a woman only grows with passing years."
[audrey hepburn]
i love being an aunt!
here are my boys, aidan (4) and jake (2).
I LOVE:
talking all night until the sun comes up... contagious laughter... people who express their passions in life... music... my iPod... traveling and discovering new places... speaking Spanish... the word "lovely"... Target... sweet, elderly people... Malibu with pineapple juice... pomegranate martinis... AUSTIN, TEXAS... healthy curiosity... acronyms... the etymology of words... my sisters... eyeliner that's been on my eyes since the night before... the smell of amber... naps... lotus flowers... candles... the butterflies at the Museum of Natural Science... The Apple Store... Stila cosmetics... the Disney parks... Coldplay... general admission concerts... sushi... Paciugo... Christmastime... orchids... scrapbooking... the smell of rain... my alone time... the island of Manhattan... meeting new people... San Marcos, Texas... Travis (nicest guys I've ever met)... discovering art that speaks to me... Snow Patrol... Cafe Brasil... Taco Milagro... drinking chamomille tea before bedtime... mid-century modern design (although you couldn't tell that from seeing my house)... baking chocolate chip cookies... pecan pie... the smell of a gas stove (i don't know why)... traveling by plane, train, or automobile... British accents (English, Irish, or Scottish)... The Weepies... hearing a song lyric that makes me go, "wow"... astrology... Sugarbaby's (who doesn't love cupcakes?)... singing at the top of my lungs (when no one is around)... putting on a movie and getting comfy on the couch... listening to Jamie Cullum when it's raining... winter... my mommy and her made-up words... dear friends who make me laugh, sometimes intentionally, sometimes not.
"i learned the hard way
that they all say
things you want to hear
and my heavy heart
sinks deep down under you
and your twisted words
your help just hurts
you are not what i thought you were
hello to high and dry
convinced me to please you
made me think that i need this too
i'm trying to let you hear me as i am"
-sara bareilles, love song
i've learned more about myself in the last year than i ever could've imagined. i hate cleaning my house, but i love organizing it (you know, "a place for everything" and all that). i'm the kind of girl who opens her own doors, takes out her own trash, makes (most of) her own home improvements. if you were to ask me if i needed help with something, i'd say "no" just out of habit.. even if i did need help. i'm starting to figure out what i will and will not accept in my relationships, both romantic and friendly ones. i'm learning who i can and can not count on when i need an ear or a shoulder. i'm learning who's going to be there for the long haul, and who's going to be there when it's convenient for them. and that is very empowering and comforting. learning when to let go and when to try harder has suddenly become very obvious to me, and that's a good thing.
i feel like this is the best time in my life so far. i don't know if it actually is, but it sure seems so. i have great, amazing friends, and they never let me feel unloved. we have been through so much together, and come out of it even better people. i can't wait to see what the future holds for us!
"i get by with a little help from my friends." - ringo starr

My Interests

my wish list:

"Sometimes it's hard to walk in a single woman's shoes.
That's why we need really special ones now and then
to make the walk a little more fun."
[Carrie Bradshaw, Sex and the City]

^Madrid, Spain - Feb. 2007^

^Toledo, Spain - Feb. 2005^
"Travel pushes my boundaries. When you travel, you become invisible, if you want. I do want. I like to be the observer. What makes people who they are? Could I feel at home here? No one expects you to have the stack of papers back by Tuesday, or to check messages, or to fertilize the geraniums. When traveling, you have the delectable possibility of not understanding a word of what is said to you. Language becomes simply a musical background for watching bicycles zoom alongside a canal, calling for nothing from you. Travel releases spontaneity. You become a godlike creature full of choice, free to visit the stately pleasure domes, make love in the morning, sketch a bell tower. You open, as in childhood, and--for a time--receive this world. There's the visceral aspect, too--the huntress who is free. Free to go, free to return home bringing memories to lay on the hearth." -Frances Mayes, from the book A Year In The World

I'm not big on going out to clubs, bars, etc., but every once in a while I don't mind going to a lounge or a jazz cafe/bar. The Red Cat Jazz Cafe downtown is a lot of fun. Oooh, and Marfreless--a chill, hole-in-the-wall, make-out bar, right across the street from my house--that's cool too :) Mugsy's is another one of my favorite places. OK, I better stop, I'm sounding like an alcoholic or something. I swear I'm not. I LOVE going to the movies. I usually go by myself, because I like going to see 2 or 3 movies in one day, and most people get tired after one. On the other hand, it's fun to go with friends to see a good movie that you can discuss afterward.
I also love movies from the periods of the '30s to the '60s. My favorites are just about any movies that star Cary Grant or Audrey Hepburn (as you will notice in my movie section). Katherine Hepburn is another favorite.
I enjoy a good musical. I prefer the ones that are funny or romantic...or both. My favorites so far are Guys & Dolls, The Producers, Once Upon A Mattress, The Music Man.
I'm almost always listening to music...I love how it affects my mood...put on some Jason Mraz and get really happy! My favorite kinds of songs are those that break your heart, where you can feel the person's pain by the way they sing, the lyrics, and the instrumentation. I like going to that place of heartbreak. It's good therapy, and it's free!

I'd like to meet:

someone who makes me feel like this:

someone who makes my heart go pitter-patter and my knees go weak.
a man who possesses chivalry, charisma, and charm.. but is compassionate and empathic as well.
he's got to be a dreamer, too. life's too short to allow bitterness and cynicism into it.

“your heart just breaks, that's all. but you can't judge, or point fingers. you just have to be lucky enough to find someone who appreciates you.”
[audrey hepburn]

"you can always tell what kind of a person a man thinks you are by the earrings he gives you. i must say, the mind reels."
[holly golightly, breakfast at tiffany's]

i'd also like to meet this wonderful artist:

and, this lovely man, too:

Books:

right now, it's anything by jennifer weiner: good in bed, in her shoes, little earthquakes...anything and everything by her is what i want to be reading.
the between boyfriends book, by cindy chupak (one of the writers from sex and the city), is really funny, and a quick read.
as you can probably tell, i'm quite superficial in my book choices. i like to read things that are fun, and serve as a distraction from everyday stresses. every once in a while, though, i'll pick up something that will open my mind and let me dream of things i want to do with my life.

Heroes:

My grandfather...he told it like it is. He could tell when something was awry. He taught me by example how to be organized in my life, and the letters he wrote to my grandmother were beautiful. He even wrote one to me when I was born.
^Me and grandpa at Daytona^
^Me, grandma and grandpa at my 1st birthday party^
My mom. She is the hardest working person I have ever known. In the past year that I've been working with her, I have seen how much she cares about her patients. I don't have any aspirations of becoming a doctor, but I hope to have a career in which I care that much about the people I work with and the people I help.
^my mommy in greece, summer '89.^
AUDREY HEPBURN. Everything about her was amazing. She was a great actress, a kind person, and a humanitarian. I hope to one day possess at least half of the selflessness that she did.
JOHN LENNON. He was a brilliant artist, musician, and activist. I admired the way that he refused to be quiet, despite Nixon's threats. He is terribly missed. We need someone like him right now.
