Coalmine Records was established in the summer of 2004 by its founder Matt Diamond p/k/a DJ Dutchmaster. As a DJ while attending Indiana University, Matt grew tired of the direction hip-hop was headed and decided to start his own label. Eventually, Matt released his first 12" titled "The Raw" and Coalmine Records was born.Coalmine's inaugural single, "The Raw" features the lyrical talents of Saigon, Inspectah Deck and Bekay, the latter of which became Coalmine's first signed artist. This 12" highlights the classic New York sound that inspired Matt to become involved in the music business. After receiving tremendous feedback and gracing countless mix-shows and mix-tapes worldwide, "The Raw" charted as college radio's number one hip-hop record in the nation.Coalmine's second 12" release features the talents of Supernatural, the 1993 New Music Seminar MC Battle Champion and recent Guinees Book of World Record Holder for longest freestyle (9 hours). The feedback for this 12" was nothing short of outstanding as many DJs worldwide consider "Altitude" G/W "1-2 Punch", Supernatural's best 12" single to date. With another chart topping 12" under the belt, Coalmine Records has begun to brand itself into the indie radio community.Coalmine's third release shifts the spotlight back onto their debut artist Bekay, with the acclaimed single "Where Brooklyn At?" B/W "Young". DJs and fans alike enjoyed both the anthemic A side collabo with the late Old Dirty Bastard as well as the Shuko produced flipside that showcases Bekay's story-telling ability. Coalmine's fourth 12" reenlisted Shuko's hard-hitting production skills for the bicoastal street banger, "All Out" featuring the Mobb Deep affiliate Big Noyd as well as Phil The Agony and Krondon (of Strong Arm Steady). This single was a favorite amongst the mix-show and mix-tape community and helped coalmine achieve its fourth consecutive college chart topping 12" record.
Since Coalmine's last 12" release, the burgeoning indie label has been hard at work by recording a multitude of records for various projects. One of these projects, "The Horror Flick LP" became Bekay's Rawkus 50 album that was released in Dec. of '07 as part of Bekay's recent induction into the Rawkus 50. The Rawkus 50 is an artist driven revolution comprised of the 50 next important hip-hop artists. Coalmine is proud to have our artist featured as a member of this select crew. Coalmine now gets set to release "The Foundation" Mix CD. The Foundation is a mixed discography of previously released, remixed and new releases produced entirely by Shuko. The Foundation includes features from Bekay, Papoose, ODB, Jae Millz, Heltah Skeltah, Doujah Raze, Shabaam Sahdeeq, R.A. The Rugged Man, Big Noyd, DJ Revolution, Skyzoo, Torae & more. Coalmine is excited about the release of this project that is scheduled to drop late in the 2nd quarter of '08. Scheduled for a late third quarter 2008 release, Coalmine has recruited some of the hottest producers in the game to craft beats for Bekays follow-up album, "Hunger Pains". "HP" features productions from the industries hottest producers such as Jonathan "JR" Rotem (50 Cent, Rihanna, Sean Kingston) to The Alchemist (Mobb Deep, Dilated Peoples) and includes features from hip-hop heavyweights Saigon, Masta Ace & Sean Price, among others. Nearing completion and set for an early first quarter release for 2009 is Coalmine Records compilation album "Unearthed". This jewel features production from established producers such as Ayatollah (Mos Def, Styles P), Domingo (Big Pun, KRS-One), Khrysis (Sean Price, Little Brother), Marco Polo (Boot Camp Clik, Kool G Rap), Illmind (of G-Unit), M-Phazes among others. "Unearthed" features guest appearances from established legends that include the likes of G. Rap, CL Smooth, Big Noyd & Large Professor in addition to features from hip-hops' rising stars that include Juganot, Skyzoo, Chaundon, Torae, A. Pinks, Terminology and more.DJ's and hip-hop enthusiasts from around the globe have come to rely on coalmine to deliver quality, buzz-worthy records that combine the proven talents of hip-hops' veteran llegends with the industries next of kin. coalmine has maintained the philosophy that artists need not just be discovered, but rather cultivated in order to reach their full potential.
