Finally there's an answer for hip-hop fans yearning for an MC that can
bring them back to the genre's golden era in New York City, while still
taking the game forward to unseen heights. His name is Skyzoo. Get
familiar. At an eager, observant age of just nine, Skyzoo penned his
first song about the urban inner city life he witnessed from the window
of his 18th floor apartment in Ebbets Field Projects. Fifteen years, six
independent mixtapes, an indie EP, over 100 songs and countless fans
later, the 25-year-old Skyzoo has matured into one of the game's most
elite packages yet. The loyal Brooklynite (splitting his time between Crown Heights and Bedford Stuyvesant), who has already received accolades from a wide range of legends including Buckshot, Dj Drama, Sean Price and EPMD for
his street-heavy, sharp narrating style and wit, understands a hip-hop
fan's mentality and is prepared to customize music for their eyes and
ears. Yes, music for their eyes AND ears. "If they lend me their ears,
they're lending me their eyes," says an assuring Skyzoo, who prides
himself in the art of storytelling with a street swagger. "I promise you
when you hear my music, I promise you, you're going to not only hear
something that you've never heard, but see something you've never seen.
It's that real." For years Skyzoo took advantage of being from the birthplace of hip hop and pounded the pavement of the city that never sleeps, resulting in a
thunderous mixtape run. Crafting original mixtapes and defining the word
"grind", Sky built his name up into one of New York's most prominent.
"People are always telling me how they've heard my album and how they
think it's crazy," Skyzoo says. "I'm always like, 'Nah, that's my
mixtape.' The way I format my stuff, it plays like an album.". Being
able to appeal to to the underground due to a lyric heavy background but
still create huge hit singles and remain above par in today's ringtone
geared climate is what sets Sky to the left of the pack. Respected
artists and producers in the game have already taken notice at the sheer
talent that Skyzoo brings to the table as well. The Brooklyn MC has
already recorded with Dj Premier, Maino, Little Brother, Khrysis, E-Ness
from Bad Boy, Parrish Smith of EPMD, Buckwild, Ron Browz, Sean Price,
Needlz, Illmind, Black Milk, and Don Cannon, just to name a few. Peeping
a page from Jay-Z's blueprint, Skyzoo is also focused on not only being
a businessman, but a business, maaan! That's because in addition to
trying to launch a mainstream solo career, Skyzoo serves as the CEO of
his own entertainment company, which he uses to create and develop ideas
for future endeavors such as films, television shows, and merchandise;
all centered around his musical foundation. "My team is the rebirth of
hip hop," says Skyzoo, "we intend to bring the integrity back to the
game, while taking it forward and remaining relevant and successful." In 2006, Skyzoo completed and released a project with super producer 9th Wonder entitled "Cloud 9: The 3 Day High". The two completed the 12 song
disc in 3 days; which is unheard of in modern day hip hop. The buzz
surrounding this EP skyrocketed through the net, and the anticipation
and response was beyond belief. Released independently through Traffic
Entertainment, fans from all over the world supported the EP, which
resulted in critical acclaim and thousands of soundscan and itunes
sales. Press wise, Skyzoo has already graced the pages of SCRATCH ("this
NY upstart provides countless flows and insight") and XXL ("possessed
with a captivating flow that falls somewhere between Jiggaman's and old
Juice Crew standout Craig-G's, he wastes no time when showing off his
skills. His narratives would surely make Big Poppa ( B.I.G.) proud")
magazines in the same month (Aug. 2006), along with reviews and feature
interviews on nearly every hip hop site imaginable. Along with that,
Skyzoo is enjoying a massive following overseas and is reaching out to
his fans via his MySpace page, which has received over 300,000 plays and
downloads on the "Cloud 9" material alone. Skyzoo's newest project; "Corner Store Classic" has been labeled as just that, classic! Hosted by Dj Kay Slay and Mick Boogie, the mixtape has been surrounded with tons of critical acclaim via the internet and print media as well as the streets. On July 30th, BET's "Rap City" crowned the tape as it's "mixtape pick of the week". Featuring production and guest spots from some of the biggest names in the game, the tape has single handedly taken the summer of 2007 by storm. The tape was a huge influence on Sky being named one of the top 10 emcees in the game; a list put together by NYC'S HOT 97 radio station and Peter Rosenberg. Amongst the likes of Nas, Andre 3000, Lil' Wayne and more, Skyzoo ranked in at number 7 in the top 10 list; as well as being the ONLY unsigned artist nominated. "Whenever people get my mixtapes, they always tell me I'm giving away so much incredible music that's worth paying for. In response I tell them 'this is just the stuff I'm giving out for free, so imagine what I make for my major debut. Imagine what I make you pay $15 for'". That debut Sky is speaking of is "The Salvation", Skyzoo's first official full length album, which he has already started preparing. "When I think about my debut, I get so excited it overwhelms me. I can't wait to really go full fledged with the recording of it. I grew up .. To Die", "Only Built For Cuban Linx", Reasonable Doubt", "Illmatic", "No Way Out", things of that nature, so I know what I wanna do with my record. It's gonna be nothing short of spectacular".With Skyzoo as the torch bearer, hip-hop's future is fluorescent
bright.
