The only place to record in Nottingham
Want to record some songs? Then look for the pedigree....we've had a who's who of city talent through our doors over the last two years. So why do the likes of Amusement Parks on Fire, Swound, Old Basford, Lo-ego and loads of others keep coming back here?
People tell us its the most relaxed environment theyve ever worked in. For a start we charge by the day not the hour, and we've got Super Mario Karts and loads of DVDs for when the drums are being covered in mics, plus the obligatory free tea and coffee.
"They make a better brew than my mum just enough milk" - Chris, The Zapatistas drummer.
Radio friendly
The bands weve worked with have chalked up a hugely impressive amount of national radio play recently. For example Swound recorded here, got a deal and are all over Radio 1, with a Maida Vale session for Rob da Bank under their belts and his top tip for 2006. Acoustic troubadour Huw Costin did his Regrets album here and is a 6Music favourite whos just signed a deal to make a second album. Angular indie types The Zapatistas have been singled out for praise by the Steve Lamacq Show, Artrocker and the like.
And when Nottingham's best band Amusement Parks on Fire signed to V2 they had the money to record pretty much anywhere. They came to us. Check out our website for a list of Random Alumni.
Who Are we?
Our chief engineer is Guy Elderfield. Guy has 15 years experience in the studio and live, including front of house for the Libertines on their rise to fame and a world tour with American all girl punk band the Donnas. Random is built to his exacting specifications based on the best of all the studios he's worked in all over the world.
We also have at our disposal the best engineers in the region, whose credits include includes Six by seven, Muse, The Wildhearts, Motorhead, David Sylvian, Earth The Californian Love Dream, Russel Mills, Brian Eno, Bent, Amusement Parks on Fire, Punish The Atom, and Matthew Jay. In other words, we know our stuff.
Equal rights for all
Every band that comes here gets exactly the same attention. If you haven't recorded before we'll go out of our way to put you at ease and make sure you produce something better than you ever expected. We'll sit down with you in advance and talk about what you are aiming for and what you want to sound like.
We'll work with you to make magic in the studio. Our focus is on quality output and making records that sound amazing on radio.
"Great songs, great playing, great storytelling, great sounds inspire us. Too much music is technically perfect but its boring. If you want to get off your backside and make things happen then we want to work with you." Guy
The technical bit
We've assembled a fantastic blend of the latest digital equipment and a range of unique and esoteric valve gear. We use Logic Pro 7 software with Focusrite, Altec, Telefunken and TLA preamps, plus a number of purpose built valve preamps built by Nottingham tech gurus Coopersonic. We've all the cool mics youd expect and a few you wouldnt, including our little blue Latvian via LA death stars.
Must be expensive then?
Nope. Weekdays are £50 a day, weekends are £75 a day. You pay for the engineer on top of that, and well sort all that out for you.
We also offer a one day package deal. Three songs, recorded, mixed and mastered for just £175.
