The Female Leadership Academy was created in 2005 and we began our third year of FLA in October 2007. The current class with graduate May 2008. The Academy targets young women living in Tulare County, 16-23 years old. In the Academy, the young women explore women’s issues, develop leadership skills and take action focused on promoting reproductive justice in our local communities. The FLA connects with other young women doing similar work in the state. This past year we traveled to Fresno to Take Back the Night during the time we focused on Violence Against Women. We also went to Sacramento for Planned Parenthood Capitol Day to lobby our representatives, march, and make our voices heard. We have amazing trainings and fun speakers. We talk about issues that matter to all of us. We are a fun group. The FLA is FREE to all that participate.
What is ACT?
ACT is the organization that oversees the Female Leadership Academy Project. Advocacy Coalition of Tulare County for Women and Girls (ACT) is a non-profit organization committed to eradicating the oppression that lies deep in the roots of Tulare County and its surrounding Central Valley region. They empower women to be leaders and raise their voices to be heard in ways that impact our society.
VISION
Through social justice activism, ACT promotes social growth and change with a special emphasis on rural women and girls. The current issue that emerged as an immediate concern is reproductive rights and justice and the impact of the anti-choice climate in the Central Valley. It is the vision of ACT to focus on many other areas of human rights in years to come, as the capacity of ACT is expanded.
