Rodrigo Leão - Brazilian Soul - Samba Rock Style

About Me

Rodrigo Leão, 37, is a singer and songwriter from São Paulo, Brazil.
He first came into the Brazilian music scene with his band Professor Antena in the early 90's. Professor Antena is still considered by critics one of the most creative Brazilian bands of the last decade and their rare vinyls are sought after by DJs all over the world. Besides Rodrigo, many other artists came from the ranks of Professor Antena. Drummer turned producer Che with the internationaly acclaimed "Sexy 70 Music Inspired by the Brazilian Sacanagem Movies", guitarrist and producer BID, who went on to produce Chico Science and Nação Zumbi, and was the driving force behind Funk Como Le Gusta, now a recording artist with his recently released "Bambas & Biritas". Besides these two, other great musicians also participated in the band: trombone player Tiquinho (FCLG, Jorge Benjor's Banda do Zé Pretinho), guitarrist Alessandro Delicato (Nomad), bassists Sergio Bartolo (karnak, FCLG) Sergio Carvalho (Djavan), Marcelo Trotta and Arthur Buccione.
As a songwriter Rodrigo Leão wrote many chart topping hits in partnership with Samuel Rosa, singer for Skank, one of Brazil's biggest rock bands. Together they wrote "Saideira", "Um mais um", Formato Mínimo", "Última Guerra" among others. Rodrigo also participates as a songwriter in Clube do Balanço, Brazil's foremost samba-rock act.

What the critics Have to say about "Vira-lata":
For those who think of music as a means to sell marketing ideas (like what pants to wear, what tatoo is in fashion etc), pop music must be wonderful right now. But, for those who expect to be touched by music, in a way that only those who make music becase they need to make it can, there is the solitary good news of Rodrigo Leão's first solo album, "Vira-lata".

Be it dancing around the living room or sitting on the sofa, just put "Vira-lata" to play and have a ball.
—Pedro Só, Rede Globo
Why listen: Rodrigo Leão pays homage to the past while keeping his eyes wide open to the present.
—Bruno Saito, Folha de São Paulo
Nostalgic, unpretentious and simple —the great qualities of this CD, along with Rodrigo's voice, sweet, masculine and delicious.
—Patricia Palumbo, Vozes do Brasil, Eldorado FM
A happy surprise for all who have their ears alert and their hearts open
—MTV Magazine
A tribute to brazilian soul of the 1970's and a great example of the new brazilian popular music. A cross between the Turma da Rua do Mattoso — Roberto Carlos, Erasmo, Tim Maia, Jorge Ben and Willson Simonal— and the best 21st Century pop music.
