I keep my boob-tube on a short leash. I allow it only a few hours of exercise a week, at most. Since it is only good for entertainment (true information from it is suspect at best), that is all I use it for - and only for DVDs now, since we got rid of cable.
Too numerous to list, but here are a few: "Grendal" by John Gardner, "Island of Dr. Moreau" by H. G. Wells and "The Green Brain" by Frank Herbert are three that come to mind right away. Also, China Mieville's "Perdido Street Station" and Chuck Palahniuk's "Lullaby."
