Capital Area Blues Society

Don't Be So Blue...!!!

About Me

Founded in July of 1995, the Capital Area Blues Society was designed to help support a growing interest in Blues music within the Lansing, MI. area and beyond.
Throughout the course of the years to follow, CABS has seen many ups and downs both within our own ranks (changes in leadership, membership, activity and so on), but always has supported the Blues music scene within our neighborhoods to the best of our abilities.
We have achieved this through many sources: A monthly publication, The Blues Ambassador, our "New" MYSPACE website (which you are seeing now), our first & regular web site: Capital Area Blues Society special events such as the mid-Michigan Blues Festival, CABS Blues Brawl (an annual event to select a band to compete in the Internation Blues Challenge), education programs, and, more recently, by becoming involved in the very succesful *OLD TOWN BLUES FESTIVAL*
We have welcomed many, many Blues artists to our community including Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers, Junior Wells, Tab Benoit, James Harman, Koko Taylor, Johnny Winter and the list goes on and on for days. For a community that is not typically known to be a haven for Blues music, we have shown that with enough determination and some good fortune, many a great thing are possible.
In 2005, CABS celebrated it's 10th year of existence and sees no signs of slowing down. Another great step that CABS has recently taken is that of filing for our 501(c)3 status. Which essentially enables us to do even more within our community through educational initiatives and hopefully will also assist CABS in obtaining more grant monies to put towards future events. We will hopefully know something on the status of this by the first part of the year.
Take a minute to look around this (satellite) MySpace web site. See what we have to offer. Join our ever-growing membership base and, most importantly, become involved in perpetuating the successes of this organization by supporting the events that we and other organizations present to the Lansing community.
Thanks for stopping by,
CABS Board of Directors
Little known fact: The first dues paying member of the CABS organization was Dennis Cullinan who at that time was playing with Those Delta Rhythm Kings. You can catch Dennis currently with the Bill Malone and the Old Town Blues Band. On the web at Old Town Blues Band

Last summer's 2007 "Blues On The Square" introduction was with; Stan Budzynski & Bill Malone of C.A.B.S. and Lansing's MAYOR: Virg Bernero. “The concert series will help get the blues on the front page rather than the back burner,” said Stan Budzynski, Blues Society board member and local bandleader. * photo and story by * "Lansing State Journal" and "Lansing City Pulse"

"When you named us the winner last year, it was the start of a year-long dream for us. Thanks for not making us have to wake up from it quite yet!" Charismatic frontman Kev Nichols said it all when 6 Hands Down won top honors again at the 6th Annual Capital Area Blues Society’s Blues Brawl on Sunday, May 18, 2008. They will once more head to Memphis, Tennessee in February 2009 as the local affiliate entry in the National Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge (IBC).

Guitarist Nichols leads the energetic, Jackson area-based four-piece ensemble, with Jimmy "the Bulldog" Kaiser ..boards, Rex Hambone on drums, and Dan Hawes doing bass duty. Their completely original Sunday set, along with strong vocals and arrangements put the band in the top spot over six other competing bands.

6 Hands Down will headline the Old Town Blues Festival in September 2008, and also receive more than $1000 in cash and prizes from the Capital Area Blues Society and the Old Town Blues Festival. This year an enhanced prize package includes a slot at the July Mill Street Blues Festival in St. Louis (MI), gigs at The Barn Tavern in Grand Ledge, the Green Door, and radio appearances on WLNZ 89.7’s Coffee Break and Scott Allman’s Sunday night Blues Cruise on 94.9FM. The band will then compete against over one hundred and fifty other amateur and semi-professional blues acts from around the globe at the IBC, which “represents an international search by The Blues Foundation and its Affiliated Organizations (mostly blues societies) for the Blues Band and Solo/Duo Blues Act ready to perform on a national stage, but just need that extra break,” according to the IBC website.

The competition was strong, with a standing room only crowd from the beginning at the Green Door Blues Bar in Lansing. First runner-up honors went to Stan Budzynski and 3rd Degree, finishing only a handful of points behind the winner. Third place went to the Mike Espy Band with Yakity Yak, last year's Detroit Blues Society Solo/Duo winners. The People's Choice Award went to Rush Hour. Other entries in the fun and friendly competition were Kathleen Mendoza & The Blues Junkies, Jimmy G and the Capitols, and Count Bracey and The Pleasure Tones. Judging the event were local DJ Dadaelian Lowrey-WLNZ, Kalamazoo Valley Blues Association President Dennis Massengill, St. Louis' Gem Theater owner Minard Shattuck, and Detroit Blues Society President Steve Allen. Allen summed up the day noting that "the support of local Blues musicians and their product is paramount to the survival of this historic genre. Blues is literally the basis of all modern music and CABS really has it's finger on the pulse of the local, Lansing area scene - BRAVO"
