Summer of Discontent

Sheffield Anti-Festival - July/August 2006

About Me

This weekend is the last dance. It's Celine Dion singing her smash hit, Baby Think Twice. It's Never Be Alone played for the fourth time. It's your dad slowdancing with your mum, both out of their minds on cheap wine.
So get on it.

Summer of Discontent 009. Final countdown.
FRIDAY 25TH AUGUST
END OF SUMMER SECRET GIG
Right. We've booked the Grapes courtesy of Adam Blanket. We can't tell you who's playing, because we wanted to make it a suprise. As such, we're airlifting them into the venue by Chinook helicopter. But we can assure you of this: they're one of the best young bands in this city at the moment.
See the myspace for clues. It's from 9pm at the Grapes, and it's £3.

SATURDAY 26TH AUGUST
END OF SUMMER DISCO TENT
Free Graveyard Rave
Some very kind people have organised a party in Sharrow General Cemetery to round off the summer. There'll be a big tent, a bigger soundsystem, a few graves, and the best djs in this city. This is not a drill. Here's a list. Bozz, Chris Lowlife, Mark Armstrong, Def Stef, Sophie Toes, Ralph Razor, London Wicker from Rough Disko.
It's going to be amazing. It's free. Bring your own. Get to it. 12-9.30pm ish. The cemetery is behind Eccy Road next to the Vine.
GRANDADBOB AT PLUG
Melodic twosome launching their album. I've no idea what they sound like I'm afraid. Goes on late.
SHAKEDOWN AT POP CENTRE
Fat funk and hip hop and heavy beets. Basically like sitting out on the step in a sweat top 20 years ago in the Bronx, but in Sheffield's failed regeneration showpiece. £3

SUNDAY 27TH AUGUST
DEMOLITION OF SORBY HALL
One of Sheffield University's halls of residence is being blown up. ACE. Demolition takes place at 11AM, but there's a cordon around it and no place to watch up close. See here
SOUP KITCHEN at the FORUM
A friendly looking all day event at the forum, featuring loads of bands including Tiny Dancers, Lets Bitter Cinema, Slow Club and Tim Pare. Also djs and a bbq. 4pm - 1am. Just a pound. Deal.
CARGO
12 hour electronic techno session. From 4-pm til 4am at the DQ bar. This sounds like a disaster on wheels. £2.
URBAN GUERILLA TECHNO MELTDOWN
Mega-rave over two floors with super skills djs. One room with techno and one room with drums and basses. £11. Til 5am. Pravda which is basically Ponana innit..

NEXT WEEK
PLUG are doing a Sheffield Unsigned festival. You need to get a ticket, but they're free: get one from Jacks or the new Plug box office which is where Superfi used to be. Loads of good bands are playing. Top whole.

There's a secret gig this Friday. We're giving away clues as to the identity of the band everyday this week. Needless to say, they're one of the best bands in this beautiful city.

NEW CLUES:

1: Edvard Munch did a painting that makes the same sort of noise as this band.

2: If the lead singer of the band playing on Friday was unemployed, he could always ask Satan for a job. Think of a Smiths song.
Influences: SUMMER OF DISCONTENT

Summer of Discontent is an anti-festival happening all through the summer. There was nothing big happening in this city. So we decided to do something about it.

We're doing a poster each week that lets people know what good stuff is going on that weekend. We're trying to link up all the amazing small things, let people know about them. And we want people to put on their own events too, do something special. Make your own festival.

It's been fun so far. Chaotic and stupid and fun. We're folding 500 posters every Wednesday. Giving out Frownies to everyone who wants one. And it's only going to get better over the next few weekends. We're not so discontent anymore.

Sounds Like:
