Signs of Dying History: Late in 1997 Sam Cape and Steve Crumbley, childhood friends, began talking seriously about forming a metal band. They had been jamming, recording and writing many songs together under the name Withersoul for quite some time. However, in 1998 Sam joined Dawn of Orion and recorded a 7" and a full length with them. Steve joined Parallax and made a recording with them. Sam quit Dawn of Orion early in 1999 after meeting Jonathan Gerhard (guitar) at Wrekage at Georgia Tech. Signs of Dying formed in the early parts of 1999 and was the result of brainstorming sessions between Jonathan, Steve, and Sam. It seemed to take forever to find the right drummer and bass player. J.B. (Jonathan Balsamo) was found in the band Delerium Tremens and Josef Bauer was discovered at the Black Box in Atlanta and was in the band Neuroblast. Signs of Dying recorded a 4 song demo at Ledbelly studios. Shortly after that, the band decided to split with J.B. After going through many drummers , the best of which was Jonathan Balsamo, Signs of Dying began using a drum machine. It was a decision based more on a need to keep practicing rather than an artistic decision.SOD videos
