About Me
SCOTT KAY AND THE CONTINENTALS is a St. Louis, Missouri band defining its niche in the ever-expanding world of rockabilly and Americana music. Honored with a 2006 St. Louis Music Award for "Best Americana Band," the band has also been featured on the Greaser's Lunchbox radio show in St. Louis, the Rockabilly Moodswing radio show in Kansas City, and has shared the stage with several touring acts including the Blasters, Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys, Deke Dickerson, and the legendary Wanda Jackson. The 2006 self-titled CD release, Scott Kay and the Continentals, demonstrates the versatility, range, musicianship, and raw energy the band is known for.
Scott Kay grew up on a farm and ranch outside of the southern Illinois town of Ava. Though traditional country and gospel music was a way of life growing up, Scott was a real-deal hillbilly rocker at heart. He spent his early years singing and playing lead guitar in rural honky-tonks while, conversely, performing Italian arias as a college student. Over time, Scott blended his wide-ranging musical tastes to combine high tenor vocals with a Bakersfield rockabilly guitar style.
Rob Guth, a native of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, is the band's resident lead and rhythm guitarist, steel guitarist, singer, songwriter, and honky tonk historian. Though he cut his teeth on jump blues, Rob also adds to the band's traditional honky tonk sound with his vintage Dwight lap steel.
"Cousin" James McCann, a native of Smithton IL, is a multi-talented bass-slapper, 6-string slinger, and overall kindly young gent who brings a wide range of musical influence and diversity to the band. Though James is the newest member of the Continentals, Scott has known him the longest due to the fact that they are indeed first cousins.
Rounding out the rhythm section on drums is Joe Kurtz, a native of Waterloo, Illinois. Joe's natural talent for all things musical is unsurpassed - he's not only a formally-trained ace percussionist, but has also been known to play a mean guitar on occasion.
SCOTT KAY AND THE CONTINENTALS' music conjures up the sights and sounds of smoke-filled honky tonks, 50's diners, Texas ice houses, and Memphis barbecue joints. Upon attending a Scott Kay and the Continentals show, it is very common to see swing dancers, greasers, country two-steppers, honky tonkers, club kids, and old-time rock-n-rollers boppin' to the same beat. Along with an extensive list of club dates, Scott Kay and the Continentals play for weddings, corporate events, outdoor festivals, private parties, barn dances, and pig roasts...
