About Me

Dad They Broke Me was started after the completion of "Camino Real" in the summer of 2005. The name was chosen due to the gig at the Side Cinema in Newcastle Upon Tyne on the 11/10/05 (Big thanks to Chris Rollins of Les Cox (sportif) for letting me play despite not having heard my stuff) DTMB then opened the 1st Big Weekender at the Cluny on 25/3/06 (Big thanks to Narbi of Chippewa Falls for adding me to a stellar roster). Since starting DTBM two 7 track EP's have been completed as well as the new, rather experimental EP "22100 Miles Above The Earth" which was written and recorded in two takes, it took about three hours on Wednesday 19th of April 2006. Dad They Broke Me releases : "CAMINO REAL" 2005 Track listing : WARMTH OF THE WATER, WASTED (1st take), LITTLE BOY LOST, BIRTHDAY SONG, SOUR SONG, GOING HOME, BEDTIME SONG. : "SONGS FOR THE BLACK RACER" 2006 Track listing : LUCY SAYS, I BREATHE FIRE, JIMMY'S TRUCK (1st take), BAD SLEEP SONG, THE MORNING AFTER, WEDDING SONG, EARSHOT. : "22100 MILES ABOVE THE EARTH : Track listing : NAIVE SONG, SONG ABOUT SOMETHING, FOUND SONG, SEASIDE SONG, SONG ABOUT LOSS, GUILTY SONG. Neil Smith was the former frontman for bands Fernadez Must Die (circa 1998) and Gold Leader (circa 2001). DTMB hope to complete a new EP by the end of the summer, using a found 1980's answering machine to record on to.

A REVIEW : Chippewa Falls, Pillow, Dad They Broke Me Head of Steam, Newcastle (22.08.06)Downstairs at the Head of Steam has never felt so atmospheric. The fairy lights and candles that provide the only illumination giving everything a slightly hazy, twilit ambience, which could at least partially explain the series of faintly ridiculous extended analogies and onomatopoeia which follow...Dad They Broke Me is one man, an acoustic guitar, two organs, and whole boatload of effects pedals. With them, he manages to conjure up a shimmering, almost sepulchral atmosphere. Organs drone, wheeze and echo while cracked, skewed vocals sit uneasily on top. One guitar song ends up sounding curiously oriental, whilst others are lovesick sea shanties. A lo-fi treat.Pillow's brand of post-rock strikes me as decidedly rural. I'm not talking pastoral here, mind. I'm talking alone in the dark woods at night, lit only by the moon, faces leering out at you. That kind of rural. Imagine A Silver Mt. Zion soundtracking The Wicker Man. Now imagine how scared that would make you feel. Eerie piano lines snake around vocals that at times, border on nursery rhyme simplicity, evoking an almost pagan air. Huge monoliths of sound are slowly built from rudimentary elements, percussively spiralling ever upwards, becoming almost oppressive, before slowly dying into eddying whirlpools of disquiet.Chippewa Falls, on the other hand, are far more direct in their menace. They're by turns intricate and fierce, like a clockwork wolf. Rachel and Laura Lancaster's guitars twinkle and chime melodically before huge fuzz roars suddenly kick in, whilst Narbi Price's drums give up their supporting role and hammer relentlessly. The muscular Wolfy is an instant adrenalin hit, and a straight up pop smash in an alternate universe where the masses aren't scared by instrumental music. Closing number Valentine starts out all rolling arpeggios, before a simple drum line transforms the mood to one of foreboding. Eventually, just as it seems the song is dying to a poignant conclusion, a teeth-rattling snarl of guitar heralds a viciously exhilarating coda.Kudos to promoter Our Tired Eyes for organising a night of music that was variously disquieting, primal, visceral, but above all, vital.Words: James Grey
