Bio (Penned by Emily Youseff)
Few up-and-coming hip hop groups perform live with an eight-piece jazz band. Even fewer have clothing sponsorships. And none have major-name acts opening for them. Except Diatribe. Distinct in sound and diverse in style, the Chicago-based duo delivers something everyone is paying attention to innovation.
Diatribe was born in the back of a high school classroom. When Epitome kicked a verse, Last Child, the brother of Typical Cats Denizen Kane, reciprocated. The two quickly became rhyme partners, despite having no experience, no equipment and no connections.
From nothing, they built both a respected name and truly original material. There was no way to be repetitive when you hadnt said anything yet, MC and producer Epitome recalls.
The duo honed their skills for four years until Last Child passed away. Dispirited, Epitome put Diatribe on hold. But J-Note, a seasoned spoken word artist, MC and fan of the group, encouraged him to keep creating. Influenced by everyone from A Tribe Called Quest, Jimi Hendrix and Hindi folk songs to jazz greats Buddy Rich and Henry Red Allen, the new duo developed a sound that combined dope lyrics, feel-good vibes and golden-era charm. We knew something was there and just kept it moving, says J-Note.
Their theme-based full-length debut, The Roaring 20s, naturally encompassed these musical interests. A perspective on age, growth and prosperity, the album is fresh and forward-thinking. Songs like the laid-back and funky Speak Easy Blues to the piano-driven Permanent State of Smoke fuse the best of the past and present.
Since reforming, Diatribe has performed at the Abbey Pub, Hot House, Second City, Double Door and the Underground Lounge. With support from Def Jam poet Kevin Coval, famed battle rapper J.U.I.C.E and a sponsorship from LRG Clothing, the group has an appeal that is catchy and creative, allowing them to reach an audience beyond traditional hip hop boundaries.
Epitome adds, Were going to leave some type of legacy.
If I had to describe The Tribe I would say theyre a trip back to hip hops roots - with todays relevance. And if you think they aint real mcs, test em - J.U.I.C.E.
