About Me

Haiku’s previous release, BLEW was regarded as “one of independent hip hop’s best releases this year” by Mathew Lurie of Time out Chicago. It was a concept album that revolved around the loose theme of color. An experiment in the abstract, BLEW delved into mood and its contextual settings. Haiku’s latest project The Dawn of Mystique is a stark contrast to the detached cool of BLEW.In November of 2002, Haiku began creating an epic narrative detailing the journey of The Hero through twelve chapters. Haiku would enlist the help of Chicago portrait artist Esho, who would create a painting in acrylic for each “chapter” or song. The two began collaborating and sharing ideas as the album slowly, but organically came to be. It would take six years to complete Dawn of Mystique and in the end, we would find the artists as utterly transformed as their protagonist. The Hero’s world is one devoid of light, ruled by tyrannical demi-gods. He is a man born fully grown yet a lifetime away from his final transformation. The Dawn of Mystique is any hero’s journey to find growth. It is Homeric in its scale and almost baroque in tone. Haiku endeavors to tell a story in a manner that few in hip-hop would attempt. More Pink Floyd than Slick Rick, The Dawn of Mystique explores the roads we travel, even when we don’t know where they may lead. This was a video from a while back that my buddy Chris Utroska directed and Jayme Joyce shot...
