Because of this rejection, Creoles had a strong bond with one another and had to create their own world and culture. They were self-sufficient and relied on each other. Creoles were landowners, artists, teachers, and business people. The Creoles as a group were status-conscious, permissive, and fun-loving. They were reputed to be fond of good manners, close family ties, lavish hospitality, music, dancing, gambling, and dueling. Even today this bond among Creoles nationwide is strong. There is tremendous pride in knowing where they come from. Their culture and heritage, rarely acknowledged in spite of its uniqueness, is worthy and deserving of attention and preservation; without it an important part of the American experience could be lost.Creole, to put it simply, means many things to many people. It derives from the Latin creare, meaning "to beget" or "create." There the Spanish introduced the word as criollo, and during Louisiana’s colonial period (1699-1803) the evolving word Creole generally referred to persons of African or European heritage born in the New World. . It was during that century that the mixed-race Creoles of Color (or gens de couleur libre, "free persons of color") came into their own as an ethnic group, enjoying many of the legal rights and privileges of whites. They occupied a middle ground between whites and enslaved blacks, and as such often possessed property and received formal educations.
