Bassist, Instructor, Producer

About Me

The Tomato Farm is my home recording studio. Operations center around a 1982 Soundcraft 3B console, and a Francis Francis X-1 espresso machine. Pro Tools is the recording format. I am a bassist working in the San Francisco bay area. I also keep a full schedule of students through my teaching practice at Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto. I am proud to be endorsed by SWR/Fender and Human Base/Salwender International. I am originally from Atlanta, Ga. where I performed and recorded with a variety of Rock, Blues and Reggae acts. The most notable containing members of the Atlanta Rhythm Section (R.J. Vealey) , Sea Level (Matt Greeley), The Glenn Phillips Band (John Boissiere), and I am the original bassist for the recently revived "Man On Fire". I have studied the bass with Ga. State Bass instructor Rich Nanista, Kai Eckhardt and Dean Peer. Since arriving in the bay area, I have done almost every conceiveable genre with some great musicians. Hershel Yatovitz (Chris Isaak), Bryant Mills (John Lee Hooker, Michelle Shocked), Garrick Davis, Nir Z (Chris Cornell, Genesis), Garth Webber (Miles Davis, Gregg Allman), Dave Meneketti, Mike Vanderhule (Y & T), John Caban, Scott Matthews (Todd Rundgren), Drew Youngs, Ronny Crawford (Lisa Loeb, Anna Nalick), Chris Rossbach (Zigaboo Modeliste), Wally Ingram (David Lindley), Mumblefinger, Brigette DeMeyer, Tony Stead (Sly Stone), Celso Alberti (Airto Moreira), Paul Dorr, James Armstrong, Will Ray (Hellecasters), Michael Zanabili and Alana Davis. I am currently at work on several singer/songwriter projects in my studio. Ashia Chacko - Features Lisa Loeb/Anna Nalick drummer Bad Ronny Crawford. www.Ashia.com ; Pete Kelso - John Hiatt meets Tom Waits at a Dead show ; Lisa Edberg - Folky/Reggae Soul. Sweetest voice you've ever heard. Plus, my secret Bluegrass tribute, and the modest beginnings of the new BTG CD. The latest BTG CD "Just About Almost There" is now available on Amazon, CD Baby, iTunes and the BTG website. As a way to distinguish the MySpace "friends" from the people I have actually met in person, I am starting to collect those folks in my favorites area. The top friends are all the folks I saw at the NAMM show this year.

Sounds Like: My main act these days, the Bartron Tyler Group (BTG, for short) has a sound not easily defined. The members all share a common progressive rock/fusion fetish. Completely instrumental, we try to steer clear of the common "fusion traps" and rely more on theme and variation, with a good dose of tasteful jamming, when it is called for. Our last bio attempted this amalgam for a description - "Phish sitting in with the Pat Metheny Group playing a King Crimson tune", or something like that. Here are some friendly quotes..."You'll dig this band. Put the CD on in the car and enhance your driving experience."BRYAN BELLER , bassist for Mike Keneally, Z (Dweezil & Ahmet Zappa), Wayne Kramer“…slinky, sexy, animated, and multi-textured instrumental music…The diverse and brilliant arrangements--which make evocative use of acoustic and electric timbres--are further enlivened by the exquisite tones and cagey phrasing of guitarists John Bartron and Mike Tyler...For a moment of sublime beauty, check out “How They Eat in Heaven,” and for a peek into the ingenuity and heart of the ensemble, listen to how the guys interpret the Beatles’ ‘Don’t Let Me Down.’”MICHAEL MOLENDA, editor in chief, GUITAR PLAYER MAGAZINE"At first I thought I was having a delayed acid flashback from some 70's Mr. Natural I took in a moment of weakness. Then I thought my cat Syd Vicious had gotten his tail caught on a turntable that was playing a Ventures album backwards. But finally I realized it was the BartronTyler Group playing and I could relax."WILL RAY of the HELLECASTERS"BTG is truly unique and all of the musicians are really fantastic, meticulous and interesting players...impressive and a real joy to listen to!"ANDY WEST, original bassist with the DIXIE DREGS.
