"Writing about music is like dancing about architecture.â€
Nobody seems to know who first came up with this comparison, but best guesses are Elvis Costello or Frank Zappa.
But what does this have to do with King Superbia you may ask? Well, firstly it is extremely difficult to describe what kind of music the four guys from Switzerland’s suburbia are creating. And secondly, Frank Zappa and Elvis Costello may be their musical soul mates.
But how did their story begin? Once upon a grey and foggy night in February 2006 King Superbia was founded somewhere in the industrial outskirts of Zurich. During this long and cold evening, multi-instrumentalist Leandro Caballero and bass-player Oliver Peter met for the first time to combine their obsession for music. After their expeditions into film music and electronica they were looking for a possibility to construct an innovative sound with old-fashioned elements. The two musicians set out to create music which was inspired by their love for Tortoise, Roxy Music and dirty Blues.
A few months later, Dominik Ziegler returned to Switzerland after two years in Japan and added his layers of dense guitar sound. But only after what seemed eons of a painful search Fabio Mueller arrived to complete the band. After working for other artists’ projects he was looking for a band where not only his unique drumming style was wanted but also his creativity was welcomed. Having finally found the perfect match King Superbia could focus all their collective energy on creating their typical sound which is raw yet with a love for superb arrangements. This music is dirty, it’s sensitive and complex, it ignores the traditional song structures and never fails to find it’s way into your head where it refuses to leave. It is the perfect soundtrack for a film noir or a disturbing night in a smoky bar where you end up having either a brawl or a beautiful woman in your arm.
