It is the dormant D.N.A. of blood thickening in veins that have yet learned to dream. It is the fervent cry in the city night, urging each soul to make way for the coming fire of devastation & renewal. It is meekness yet it is strength. It is defeat & it is victory. It is a weapon & it is the hand that rocks the cradle it is Cell
Birthed within hungry minds, just prior to the dawn of the new millennium, brothers Cliff & Gideon Thompson converged around a love of music laced with aggression and emotion. Heralding from Manurewa, a tough suburban neighbourhood in South Auckland (New Zealand), Cells incubation period was in an environment over-run by Hip Hop and RnB.
Going against the flow, in 2001 the core members of the band were called upon for duty, laying down a foundation built upon a rock. They took their hip hop influence, placed it squarely on the chopping block & smashed it with an Ibanez axe, only to refashion its broken, scattered pieces into a brash art they like to call Twisted Metal. This fusion of pounding funk & hip hop grooves, blanketed with plush rhythmical guitars and a focused, yet chaotic vocal roar is this very foundation.
Inspired by thoughts, beliefs & environment, Cell fashion songs of purpose, insight & meaning. There is a deeper level to each phrase, riff & melody. Songs are not mere words & notes, but are defined by an emotional response a physical response action.
For a time, Cell has been forming, growing, developing in their glass vessel, hidden in a laboratory across the Tasman Sea. Some thought it was an experiment, others knew it was much more. The time is upon us for Cell to be released from this laboratory. Cell are the music that we have longed to hear but we know deep in out gut we haven't been ready.
