About Me

Review From The Duke"I'd always been a bit wary of going to see a Punk tribute to a band of the Seventies era. That was the time of frenetic playing with passion and fervour that has not been matched since. Instruments were not so much played but 'attacked'. And no band had such a reputation for excitement than Stiff Little Fingers. Many many hours of rehearsals may give you the right sound, but no amount of rehearsing can give you the passion. Rigid Digits are a tribute to SLF and they had the dubious honour of being the last ever band to play at the Duke of Cumberland in Felling. It was originally planned to be the Force, but as some dates were juggled, it turned out to be Rigid Digits. I couldn't let Thompa go without saying goodbye so I made my way through there and had a quick word with photographer Rob before the band came on 'You won't be disappointed' was his last words before the band took to the stage. And, surprisingly, I wasn't. Singer 'Pea' is a superb frontman and knows exactly how to hold the audience's attention. Looking like Baz Warne's younger brother he downed the pints as quick as the band raced through the songs. I closed my eyes and they DID sound just like Stiff Little Fingers. But, little did I know they had a lot more up their sleeves than just SLF. From the raucous Seventies Punk they slipped into 'Another Brick in the Wall.' Marvellous. Couple of Pistols numbers and the stage was full of musicians from all over the place. Even some Green Day was thrown in. The place was truly rockin' by this time and the shots of the crowd say it all. The Duke was buzzing. The band were truly superb. And as I was driving, it certainly wasn't the complementary JD (again, proferred before I could ask!) that swayed my judgement. In fact, I enjoyed them so much I will catch them again with SLR in hand next time as I did not have any intention of actually reviewing the band tonight! The band ended with the excellent Suspect Device; the audience dwindled away and I bumped into Thompa and Rob outside and talked for a while, and then I realised that the band had picked up their instruments and were carrying on playing!! Over two hours and the lads were still belting it out!!! Saw Terry from Powerage too, but the last word must go to Thompa who told me: 'I've had nine years at the Duke and there is absolutely nothing I regret. They've been nine happy years.' Asking Thompa to keep in touch, he said: 'I'm gonna do what I love and go and see bands, and tell Riffs if they are good or they are shite!'..................................................... ............................................................ .........................................................RIG ID DIGITS ARE....PEA.VOX...DAVE.GUITAR/VOX......BILLY.BASS...NICK...DR UMS/VOX. ----------------- Original Message ----------------- From: william Date: Jan 3 2007 09:39 As the name suggests, Rigid Digits are a Stiff Little Fingers tribute band. Initially advertised as a 2pm start, this ended up taking place at a normal evening time. There was a packed house of Punks, skinheads, ex-Punks and skins, Toon Army lads, and assorted local degenerates and piss-artists here. The support band were called The Creepers, who were in the early Blondie mould, but with a harder edge to them, with female singer and bassist, and lads on lead guitar and drums. They had a lot of energy and attitude, and did a good version of Slaughter & Dogs song, Quick Joey Small.Rigid Digits were up next, and performed a great set of nostalgic Stiff Little Fingers numbers. Opening up with Nobody's Heroes, then straight into Gotta Get Away, with plenty of backing vocals from the audience. Tin Soldiers was next, and after that, I can't remember the order, but there were Johnny Was, At The Edge, Fly The Flag.Among the audience were members of local bands and mates, who were invited onto the stage to guest for various numbers by SLF, and a few other well known bands. Steve from Holy Racket sang English Civil War, while Chris and Lee Wright of Crashed Out did a rowdy version of I'm An Upstart. Then, it was back to Rigid Digits doing more Stiff Little Fingers stuff. The tiny place was heaving inside with sweaty people, and it was nice to get out for some fresh air once in a while. The Duke Of Cumberland is a cracking little venue, and I wish more bands would play here. Mainly cos it's within walking distance of my house.space captain p.( take us outta here mr sulu) digit is reported to have reached the moon on the 30th of dec ember 2006!having successfully piloted the good ship "empty pie", the intrepid captain and fellow digits were said to be in high spirits (or soaked in spirits according to one source!) on landing on the aforementioned "moon".during a space sattelite link up the space trekking digits were heard chanting in unison "thommpa! joan! jackie! pat! LAGER! LAGER!" this is thought to be the secret fuel that was used to power the "emty pie" on its historical flght!it appears that the moon stomping "rigid digits" have not come back down to earth as yet and it is unlikely that they were ever on this planet in the first place! the punk rock world waits with baited breath for the next sighting of our intrepid "claggons
