TRIBUTE to Victor Leshkevich

About Me

Val Belin recollected: - Vladimir always was an unpredictable person. It can be understood, when around you are laymen, it is present in view an average potential level of the restaurant musician. And nomadic life too has to drunkenness. Who at that time haven’t been drunk? When at the end of July, 1991 I was going to write down the first instrumental album I have invited Kolpakoff as the second soloist. To tell the truth I was not sure, that he will take for this work - it did not promise money. First he has refused and I has already lost hope, having decided to write down a trio. Unexpectedly in studio there were appeared “Kolpak” with a saxophone. Whether it is necessary to describe, how I was delighted, when literally by the spine have felt his presence. The first rehearsal was on big stage at so called “House of Culture” of Railway men (in a cellar, by the way then there was also studio Apello) .The sound of his old alto has the timbre of a cello and sounded the same, and music flew absolutely firm (as we then were expressed). He is an excellent saxophonist - the unsurpassed soloist of the best Big Bands of the country. Only saying his name, I received the respect as the top-level among woodwind players. But also I tried not to put down the general glory of the Riga musicians where it would be necessary to act. Riga at that time was as the Mecca of the jazz in the former USSR.

Influences: Vagif Mustafa Zadeh, an established Jazz legend throughout the former USSR, of whom BB. King said "people call me the king of the blues, but if I could play the piano like you do, I would call myself God," was a pioneer in as much as he was the first musician to incorporate the traditional music of his homeland, known as "mugam" into popular Western Jazz music. Mugam, itself a highly improvisational style, refers to a modal system of music of which there exist over 70 types, all defined by their specific pattern of intervals, range, as well as direction of melodic movement and rhythm
