About Me

Joachim was born eight days after the sudden death of Elvis, 24th of August 1977 in a small Belgium village called Duffel near the city of Antwerp, the place that invented the famous duffelcoat in Belgium.. Swiftly after his birth the little man moved with his family to the harbourcity Rotterdam. Being raised within a cultural arty family and scene he got surrounded by creatives and inspiring people at a young age. Besides this he had to put up with the daily task of listening to his fathers abstract and modern classical music like the early electronic remakes of composers such as Mozart, Bach and Vivaldi , but also Steve Reich, Philip Glass and Mike Oldfield and pink Floyd. where amongst the daily listening music around the house. "Ever tried playing with LEGO and wooden blocks while listening to Otto Kettings experimental music ? "His older sister was more into the punk and rock scene listening to upcoming bands such as The Cure, The Cult, New Order and Depeche Mode, but also artists such as Prince and the high voiced keyboard synth man Howard Jones. You could say Joachim was raised tasting a musical coctail deluxe, Being from the age that electronic music and hip hop gave birth from the underground and slowly arrived to a wider audience he could not resist listening to new upcoming parental advisory Hip Hop crew's like Public Enemy, Ghettoboys and NWA.The combination of his wide intrest in music, arts and his theatrical background that nurtured his passion for the technical elements within theatre such as high tech light / stage design and decor had to be the perfect breedingground for someone to get involved within the wide spectrum of electronic music and events.Soon his electronic music virus got him playing at almost every birthday and neighboorhood bash in the area and soon after, Joachim also started to interfear with the schoolmanagements telling the board for schoolevents that the way they did their parties was way to oldfashioned for their generation. And so Joachim started to introduce house, electro and hip hop music with the result that proper school raves where born in Rotterdam. His love and passion for music was obvious, aswell as his good nose for new music and creative talent. He started to get seriously involved in electronic music in 1991/1992 after listening to a wide variety of electronic music styles and mixing more and more frequent in bars, school events and private parties. It was at his 15th when he moved back to Antwerp for his international business study and got aquanted with the Belgium dancescene. Feeded by his weekly visits to USA import Records and the Wonka studio's. Inspired and tutored in music by deejays such as Koeni and Sebastian de Kalonji who worked every wednesday in the shop. His visits to clubs such as Cafe D anvers and Roxy in Amsterdam where Dimitri was the most magical and worked extremely inspiring at that time. After meeting Ron Trent and seeing the man play real housemusic and deep funky techno on three decks Joachim was definetly hooked by the electronic virus. As from that period in time Joachim became obsessed and followed his own path within the upcoming electronic music scene destined to make his hobby his life / future, after a stormy Belgium educational adventure, He moved back to Rotterdam packed with the best records selected with care in his favorite USA import store after a stormy Belgium educational adventure.Joachim started mixing the decks frequently within the club scene and illegal raves in 1995. And slowly took his place within the Dutch dance scene with his base firmly rooted in Rotterdam. In 1996 Joachim and two good friends Eduard von Lindheim and Electramike where asked to organise a special queensday event and the birth of Control Delete was born. After this day the trio where obsessed by putting on events illegal or legal with Techno and Drum and Bass music, visuals installations, intelligent lights, decorations and guerilla flyers but most of all freedom and change was the drive of the CTRL/DEL trio. Control Delete became known for their illegal squadparties in an old former courthouse based in Rotterdam and they also attended illegal outdoor raves such as technival but also organised events in exclusive locations such as "De Kunsthal" arthouse in Rotterdam. Not long after this the CTRL/DEL crew got invited to run a weekly clubnight at the Danssalon (at that time a very well known club in Rotterdam) Introducing names such as Jamie Anderson, Steve Rachmad and Mark Broom for the first time in Rotterdam but also having residents such as Tiesto playing rocking tech house and deep techno at that time. (Not knowing that 5 years later this same Tiesto became the worlds number 1 dj)In 1998 Joachim founded Sound Architecture, A concept founded out of love and devotion for electronic dance music and the city of architecture Rotterdam. Born from the lacking of quality electronic house, techno and drum and bass events. The first Sound Architecture events held in the lobby and the basement of a famous cinema called "Cinerama" became legendary within Rotterdam. These events where for allot of ineternational artists their debut performance within the Netherlands. Nowaday household names like James Ruskin, Oliver Ho, Ben Sims, Random Noise Generation, Steve Bicknell, Space DJs and Aril Brikha where amongst the guests introduced to the Rotterdam crowd for the first time creating a new direction within the local techno scene at that time.Throughout the years Sound Architecture became a solid and essential fundament for the local dance scene and soon had the honour of working with clubs and clubnights such as Mazzo - Amsterdam, Doornroosje - Nijmegen and Nighttown hosting a legendary Future night with Random Noise Generation live.In 2001 Rotterdam became Cultural Capital of Europe and in the same year Joachim and Erwin Unger founded the highly rated and multiple rewarded clubnight "ON" @ Off Corso which was a cooperation between the legendary Silly Symphonies crew and Sound Architecture. For three years "ON" became the most influential international clubnight in Rotterdam. Joachim, Dimitri, Remy, Jay Samuel and Jamie Anderson became residents and got the honour to play with a huge list of internationally acclaimed names in the industry such as X Press 2, Ricardo Villalobos, Jeff Mills, Juri Hulkonnen, Anthony Rother, Terry Francis amongst others.Within the "ON" nights Joachim created the freedom to develop some of his own concepts such as "The Night of Motorcity Detroit" because of his passionate intrest in the motor city sound and most of all the Detroit based artists and labels such as Transmat, UR, 430 West, The nights became a tribute to the motorcity with Joachim as a resident alongside bi-monthly resident and Detroit pioneer Derrick May inviting guests like Kenny Larkin, Stacey Pullen, Octave One live, Rolando and Blake Baxter. The Subtronics drum and bass nights became Sound Architecture's answer to the harder forms of drum and bass and the limited intelligent drum and bass nights on dutch soil. With residents MSC and D Virus both from Rotterdam and a solid London connection between LTJ Bukem's Good looking crew and later on The Hospital crew ft London Electricity Subtronic also started bringing in other legends such as Photek, Ed Rush, Markus Intalex and homeboy Dreazz. This and the combination of the strong and upfront graphic designs by illustrator Eelco van Den Berg aka D Virus made Subtronics a household name within the scene doing events throughout the Benelux in clubs such as 11 - Amsterdam, Cafe Danvers - Antwerp, Off-Corso - Rotterdam, Winkel van Sinkel/Poema - Utrecht and Fuse in Brussels.Music People and Less=More where the nights where Joachim could temper his own new direction in music, as a resident of ON, Joachim was known as one of the finest warm up deejays for all their international guests this gave him the oppurtunity to play deep yet driving, the sound that nowerdays is strongly associated to the term minimal house. The deejays that he invited for the Less=More nights where those playing the music that Joachim loved playing himself as a deejay and would have liked to hear in a club all night long and if possible all morning and the next day.
