About Me

I'm a carpenter/artisan.( My largely ceremonial job title is "Director of Historic Preservation"...yet I still find myself most often at the business end of a hammer or even a shovel...ah, the glamour.) My life pretty much revolves around the past; principally preserving, reproducing, and decorating historic buildings, furniture, and artifacts. My chief sphere of interest is the American pre-industrial era(pre 1850), although the mid-20th century style is a fascination as well.

Enthusiasms and Influences~stuff I'm made from:

1954 Ford Victoria. My first "old" car; I got it when I was 18, and drove it daily for 2 years. I should never have sold it. Hopefully someday I'll find another... ____________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ The first house I ever owned (and last, so far). It was built ca. 1798 in Newportville, Bucks County, Pa. I did a lot of restorstion work on it, which eventually led to my current voaction. It was also wonderfully haunted. (look into my blogs for details)
I loved this little house. If I could have packed it up and taken it with me, I would have. I may just have to build a reproduction one day...albiet one with closets. ____________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ Ephemera...Like this Civil War poster requesting blankets for the 104th Pa. Infantry, which was raised in Bucks County. I love old paper...books, letters, newspapers (My oldest is a Phila. paper from 1801). I'm in awe of anything old and fragile that still exists. ____________________________________________________________

Beating the blues

I have been struck with a mood today, so I've decided to relieve it in the best way I know of...by ranting about something I have no control over and which really doesn't affect me, and by viciously m...

When it rains...

...it pours. Okay, it's bad enough my car is going to cost me almost $500 to fix, but today in work the other shoe dropped. I just yesterday finished what was basically my first tile job. It looks goo...

Drive it til the wheels fall off.

That's usually been my slogan, and unfortunately one of my worst habits. I know things are going to break on my car, but I tend to remain in a blissful state of denial until I experience catastrophic ...

My current song

I just re-found this album...Smash Palace's self-titled debut from 1985. I haven't heard it in 20 years, when I lent the original record to a friend and it 'vanished'. It's not the greatest music, but...

Watching Spike just now (yeah, I know...what do I expect), I see an ad for a show featuring guys in a tournament to catch sharks. I'm not sure, but my presumption is that they (the sharks that is) are...

Patience, prudence, and the art of just saying no.

Today was yet another delightfully humid day in East Tennessee, made all the more gleeful by the fact that I was working near a lake...is it possible to be above 100% humidity? I'm no scientist, but I...

So...

...I'm wondering...am I beginning to be a bore? Or have I been one for a while, which would make me a rather dense bore? I'm feeling disinterested and uninteresting lately. I feel as if that tiny frag...
