Love and Darkness and my Sidearm...

About Me

MyGen Profile Generator MyGen Profile GeneratorWho is Steven Marshall? Determined, optimistic, loyal. A lover and a fighter. A royal pain in the ass. Spiritual... but not religious. I believe in God, and on a good day, I think She believes in me, too. As Jewel said in her song 'Hands': "In the end, only kindness matters." I believe in treating others with the kindness and respect you hope to receive, no matter what role they play in your life (beware... that person you disrespect on the street could turn out to be the paramedic who saves the life of your child, some day). So who is Steven Marshall? The truth is... that's a good question. Like most of us, I'm still trying to figure that one out as I go. Some friends will tell you I'm the life of the party, others will tell you that, like the enigmatic spirit of Shirley Jackson's Hill House, I walk alone. Perceive me as you will. But know this... I'm a dreamer. If you're visiting this page at all, you're probably familiar with my career as a writer. Perhaps you followed my time as a newspaper columist (maybe you were one of those cheered when I took on the idiots who were trying to ban 'Harry Potter' from our local libraries, or perhaps you were one of those from the other side who accused me of filling children's heads with dark ideas). More than likely, you're familiar with my ever growing portfolio of published stories. Well, here are some facts. I was born in Dagenham, Essex. Started writing at an early age, but first gained editorial attention when I worked at Andre Deutsch Ltd (a London publishing house). On the strength of a story called 'Storm', I was urged to pursue my dreams of a career in writing. Two years later I earned my first solid publishing credit with a ghost story, 'The Darkest Madness.' It's fairly unspectacular, when I look back at it now. It did, however, earn some attention and got my face into the newspaper. Also set me squarely on the course of my destiny. In 1996 I married and emigrated to Canada, and started a whole new chapter in my personal journey. While my marriage wasn't destined to last, it did spawn two beautiful sons, Jared and Connor, who now live with me full time. They are the best children in the world (naturally, I'm biased), and my love for them knows no bounds. To date, my prize-winning stories have appeared in 'Writer's Journal' magazine, 'Thirteen Stories' magazine, 'Simulacrum', and in the paperback anthologies 'Scratchings on the Moon: Stories from the Edge' and 'Writers Undercover'. I currently have two novels on the go. One is almost finished (The Shadow of Nova Blue), the other is about half/three quarters done (Galico). In my spare time I give public readings of my work, teach a writing course for teens/adults, and continue the struggle of navigating this crazy publishing business. This page is my space to share my passions. It is a celebration not only of my personal writing, but of my inspirations, such as Warren Publishing's awesome vampire character, 'Vampirella', and Joss Whedon's incredible show 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'. It is also a celebration of my own love and respect for the ultimate power of femininity. While I occasionally write about male characters, most of my protaganists are women; a fact that stems from my own fascination with the sensuality of the female form and the complexity of the female mind. I appreciate you taking the time to visit and peruse my previously published works. You are a reader, and as a writer, I am incomplete without you. Know that you are cherished.
