PROJECT POLAROID (KOOL KEITH & TOMC3 )

About Me

Project Polaroid.... Project Polaroid is the culmination of ideas put together by producer TomC3 and Kool Keith. Those that are unfamiliar with TomC3 might recognize his first project for Threshold Recordings entitled: Dopestyle 1231. The album was released in 2004 and featured such guests as label mate Motion Man, Kool Keith, Del tha Funkee Homosapien and Vast Aire from Cannibal Ox. The album was not only applauded for it's well selected guests, but also for its sonic darkness and lo-fi beats created by TomC3. XLR8R magazine has labeled TomC3's production as - "Soncially dark and murky", Elemental magazine proclaims - " Tight production with moody, eerie soundscapes evoking memories of classic Gravediggaz". Possessing a keen ear for distinct sounds to go along with chopping and looping techniques, TomC3 was able to put together a "vivd' album that was like hearing the score to your favorite "B" horror movie soundtrack. Some find it hard to believe that he produces his tracks utilizing what is considered outdated equipment. Every track is composed utilizing the Akai MPC 60. A machine that came out around 15 years ago! Using this outdated machine , he manages to come up with modern sounds and techniques that never sound dated. It is this characteristic sound that he possesses which led him to this collaboration with Kool Keith. An MC whose contributions to Hip Hop are beyond mere mortals. To understand Kool Keiths contribution to Hip Hop, one must simply listen to a "pre" Kool Keith MC, then listen to Kool Keith and follow that with a "post" Kool Keith MC. Only then will you, maybe, understand what Kool Keith brought to the lyrical game. Always an innovator, Kool Keith recognized this distinct sound of TomC3. While working on the song "Wedgie" for the Dopestyle1231 album, the two connected so well that they felt that one song wasn't enough. And what ensued was a year long process of working on songs together. Taking turns recording in each others hometown, Keith would fly into San Francisco and TomC3 would go to New York to finish this album. Back and forth for 12 months. The end result is a 14 track Lo-Fi classic. Kool Keith brings his creative extra terrestrial styles and meshes them with TomC3's dusty tracks. Blended together, this combination becomes, what could be considered, a musical equivelant to having Spock instead of Michael Douglas on 70's TV crime drama "The Streets of San Francisco". What a trip! Along this ride, they pick up a few friends to help them cruise thru the streets. Prince Po, from the mighty Organized Konfusion, lends his voice for the bionically challenged "Mechanical Mechanix". A song that is best described as being as hip as Danny Partridge. Unforgettable. Who can forget Kool Keiths partner from the classic "Masters of Illusion" album? Lending his distinct voice and 40 oz. powered vocals is none other than Bay Area legend Motion Man. Good times are had on the enterprise as you listen to the rhyming on the "sci-fi" influenced beat, picture Motion Man with a mohawk and you will understand the title of the song, "Clubber Lang". Keeping it within the crew, TomC3 asks fellow Bay Area resident and MC of the group "Third Site", Jihad the Ruffneck, to join them for the ride. What follows is the sonically pleasurable "Feel Me". If you like to compare todays MC's to Shirley Temple, then this song is for you. A verbal dis on the sly to the current corporate conveyor belt MC. When all is wrapped up and packaged, the end result is "Project Polaroid". TomC3 on production and Kool Keith on lead vocals. Upon being asked what the title suggests, the two simply respond "everything is full blast android".
