JebeBara = Unity Drum

About Me

RootsyRecords.com is a..

Dear Friends,

Sometimes it happens that we want to play a djembe rhythm really right, and it may actually be a rhythm that we can normally play very well. But for some reason that day, the spirit says, "No!".

Our teacher Abdoulaye Diakite told us many times that, "If you try to force the djembe, the djembe will force you." His teacher Suncaru Jara told him the same thing.

And we agree. We don't need to force our rhythms to happen. Using force only makes the spirit hold back, rather than accepting and allowing our drum rhythms to be good.

Nonetheless, we realize that many people out there may still choose to force rhythms that are obviously not working. To this, we can only say that we've never seen drummers forcing rhythms in Mali and Senegal. In Africa, if a rhythm isn't working out, the drummers just stop and move on to another song or rhythm.

In a like manner, we should try to understand and respect that each djembe rhythm has its own unique time and place. We should also try to be more conscious and aware of when a rhythm just isn't happening.

Ultimately, we need to understand that we are not deciding which drum rhythms to play. Instead we are listening to discover and follow what the spirit demands..

Once you embark on the path of the djembe, you will learn so much. You will meet so many different kinds of people with so many different skills. It is amazing the network of talented people you will get to know on your djembe journey!

The djembe truly is a community drum and a social instrument. In times of need, you will find a "djembe friend" usually there to help you. Indeed, the djembe truly is a "unity drum" bringing together an amazing group of people.

African music!

One love,
