MICHAEL SUTTONBorn in the Virgin Islands in 1965, Michael Sutton began taking photographs at the tender age of 13 years. His very first subjects were his family and friends who lived within the same community. After residing in the Midwest for a number of years, Michael took his art to the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design with hopes to contour his passion into a profession. Shortly after completing his degree, he immersed himself into the commercial industry, shooting hundreds of models, working for clients such as Blue Magazine, Johnson & Johnson as well as top modeling agencies Ford, Elite, Aria Chicago, Michele Pommier, and Irene Marie. During this consistent road of commercial work, Michael also explored other facets of his talent, painting avant-garde images and masks. Throughout this exploration of his capabilities, Michael Sutton discovered another genre that would construct an incredible part of who he is today. The taboo of nudity on film captured his artistic curiosity, the camera utilized as a filter, a translator. This inclination created the visual manifestation that is known today as Figure in Form. Masculinity and elegance are the driving forces behind the photographs in this exhibition. As seen in a variety of his images, his love for avant-garde expression and exquisite masks was tastefully incorporated. When doing this, he realized the affect it could have on his models. “Masks are a way for the subject to transform himself into who he wants to become.†After studying his photographs, one will find themselves captivated by artistic use of nudity birthed by composition, lighting, the poised form, and the sculpted shape or emotions portrayed in each piece. This intriguing and captivating photographer, in spite of his success is a private individual who loves to create beautiful art for himself, and for his voyeurs worldwide.
