About Me

The NAACP believes strongly that future leaders must be developed today, and such development is ongoing in the Youth & College Division, created in 1936. Today there are more than 30,000 young people representing 400 Youth Councils, High School Chapters and College Chapters actively involved in the fight for civil rights. The NAACP has one of the largest organized groups of young people of any secular organization in the country.

Mission
The mission of the NAACP Youth & College Division shall be to inform youth of the problems affecting African Americans and other racial and ethnic minorities; to advance the economic, education, social and political status of African Americans and other racial and ethnic minorities and their harmonious cooperation with other peoples; to stimulate an appreciation of the African Diaspora and other people of color’s contribution to civilization; and to develop an intelligent, militant effective youth leadership.

Objectives
Leadership and Activism Training
Proactive Political and Community Activism
Recruitment of new Youth Units
Maintenance of existing Youth Units
Public awareness of the necessity of youth involvement
To be the leaders and trendsetters in the area of youth leadership and civil rights training

The San Jose/Silicon Valley chapter of the Youth & College division was established in 1981, and continues to support the community through a variety of activities. Through the year we host a number of activities including SpeakOuts, fundraising parties and our annual pageant. We also travel to state, regional and national conventions, and attend the Image awards.

To get involved please join us at our meetings on the FIRST and THIRD Sunday of every month at the NAACP Office in downtown San Jose. Membership is $10/year for youth 17 and under (does not include Crisis Magazine subscription), $15 for people 20 and under which includes Crisis Magazine subscription and for those 21 and over adult membership is $30/year and includes a subscription to the Crisis magazine. We look forward to seeing you there!

My Interests

Students have always been at the forefront of most major social movements. From the Civil Rights Movement of the 60s to the anti-apartheid movement of the 1980s, student activism has forced society and the world to change. NAACP Youth Councils, High School Chapters and College Chapters all across America are engaged in social justice activism addressing issues at the local, state and national level. The primary focus issues for the Division are the following:

Economic Development
Education
Health
Juvenile Justice
Voter Empowerment

I'd like to meet:

Anybody who wants to make their community a better place for all of us to live, work and play in!

We're also looking for another co-Advisor, if you or somebody you know is interested, please contact us at [email protected] . To qualify you must be over 25 and a member of the Adult branch.
