Faction (NZ)

Real heavy, and loaded with dynamite!

About Me

Faction is the production duo of Jarred Baigent and James Knuckey. Both of us have been producing for a few years now and at the end of 2005 we decided to collaborate. We both have a love for roots, it's a New Zealand thing. We're both firmly of the opinion that there isn't enough roots-dub influenced Drum & Bass out there. The first result has been successful already: "Fallujah Dub" is on high rotate on Active 89FM and other radio stations around the country thanks to Empathy Recordings . We aim to continue as we started.
Faction is obviously about Drum & Bass, but the genre itself and dance music in general is about juxtaposition, a collision of styles and cultures. Faction is about the collision of old and new. Roots Dub as started by founding fathers such as King Tubby and Scratch Perry is the origin of the remix, the origin of studio produced dance music. All that followed - hip hop, electro, disco, house, techno, breakbeat - all has its origins in roots reggae and Dub. The man credited with inventing the breakbeat, DJ Cool Herc, was Jamaican. Drum & Bass is all about the new, using the pinnacle of music production and manipulation technology. Combine the two and it's one hell of a sound. That's what Faction aims for.
James (Conspiracy): Conspiracy has been playing drum & bass for a while now. In 1994 he started the longest running drum & bass show in New Zealand: Futurefunk, which still airs 9pm-11pm Friday nights on Active 89FM. He has a long list of international support slots going back to 96, as well as support for Wellington's best D&B crews over the years.
Jarred (Tamper): Tamper is a DJ whose sound encompasses the tech-dub end of the Drum & Bass spectrum. Hailing from Hamilton, Tamper started playing out near the end of the last decade before moving to Wellington. Tamper has been a producer for a number of years now, at first under the name Mowgli. Look out for new releases under the Tamper moniker in the next year, as well as half of the production duo Faction.
