David McBee is a professional singer with more than 25 years of studio and live experience with various blues, progressive rock and heavy metal bands. Born and raised in Gaffney, S.C., McBee began singing when he was 15 with local bands and knew instantly he wanted to do it for the rest of his life. He went on the road for the first time with Sovereign Steel at the age of 16 and stayed on the road for nine months. "I just wanted to sing," McBee said. "It was just about the music with me."
McBee moved to Virginia Beach in the late 1980s at the height of the heavy metal scene to pursue a lifelong dream of becoming a professional musician. His bands included Master Cylinder, After Class, and Relic. After a brief stint with Gypsy Heart, he spent a year with Master Cylinder. The band toured the East Coast and recorded one album that received some local radio airplay. One of the Master Cylinder songs resulted in McBee moving to Hollywood in 1990 for auditions with bands being formed by current Scorpions drummer James Kotac and former Keel guitarist Marc Ferrari. "Marc and James are super guys. It just didn't work out. So I just stayed in Hollywood and moved from jam session to jam session with Paul Shortino from Rough Cutt, Jamie St. James from Black 'N Blue, and Roy Cathey from Sweat 'N Bullets," McBee said. "It was a lot of fun, but the Hollywood scene was rough on a Southern boy."
McBee returned to South Carolina where he spent three years touring with a Top 40 band called Catch 22. Tha band played every single night except Sundays, making McBee's voice stronger and even more versatile. "We played everywhere from the Midwest to Florida, even Puerto Rico," he said. After the band left the road, McBee returned to Gaffney where he joined a Southern blues/rock band called Big Dixon. The band spent two years together, recording a self-titled album that was released independently.
McBee is the former lead singer for ShockOpera, a progressive metal band based in the Carolinas, and Teer, prog metal band based in Florida. He does side projects with bands around the world. McBee recently recorded a Dream Theater tune for a tribute album released by the band Kalisia, and is currently writing and recording music with guitarist Michael Young.
McBee is a strong, versatile vocalist capable of singing in a wide range of musical styles. His influences include Ronnie James Dio, Geoff Tate, Russell Allen, Ian Gillan, David Bowie and Glenn Hughes. "One of the things I like about singing this kind of music is the songs tell a story through the listener's imagination," McBee said. "I enjoy using my voice to take people on a journey. I want them to leave a concert feeling like we were part of a great music adventure together."
McBee is available for recording projects.
