I am here for Friends

About Me

Lately, I've been dancing. I'm told it's embarrassing.

I've hardly danced before. I was always on the sidelines, scratching my elbows. I'd watch my dad dancing, at weddings and Bar Mitzvhas, his funky shuffle, a sort of in-place jog, his thumbs out. He looked joyful, ridiculous. I'm all about joy and ridiculousness, but I was never one to so obviously risk embarrassment.

Actually, that's a lie. I court embarrassing situations. I seek out and intentionally put myself and others in embarrassing situations.

But, still, I refused to dance. I've always wanted to look cool. Even when I was embarrassing myself and others, I took care to look cool.

It's impossible for me to look cool dancing.

What if coolness is not about how you look at all, but how you feel? That might explain my Dad, embarrasing and prominent, and so utterly full of goofy joy. He's probably the coolest person I know.

So, fuck it, I'm trying it out. I've started dancing. So far, I feel glorious.

I have, possibly, the coolest friends ever. You might think I'm joking, but I'm not. You might think I'm bragging, but I'm not.

I can prove my friend's coolness scientifically. I can--but I won't bore you with science. Instead, I'll use love: I honestly feel, in the bottom of my heart, I have the coolest friends in the world.

I know many of my friends here on Myspace in real life. I have, however, met a few Myspace people. Without fail, I have loved them. I've made some beautiful friendships here.

This picture (by Suzanne) is my new theme picture right now.

Music:

Right now, I'm listening to Beirut, Sigur Ros, Belle & Sebastian, Wyclef, Jorge Drexler, Franz Ferdinand, The Strokes, and Jack Johnson.

I love songs with odd, unexpected lyrics, like when Amy Winehouse sings:
What kind of fuckery is this?

You made me miss the Slick Rick gig (oh Slick Rick...)

Or when Jens Lekman sings:
I picked up a sea-shell to illustrate my homelessness, but a crab crawled out of it making it useless.

Or when Kimya Dawson sings:
I was quiet as a mouse when I snuck into your house and took roofies with your spouse...

Movies:

Top Ten Movies (in no particular order): 1. Jaws 2. The Big Lebowski 3. The Endless Summer 4. Y Tu Mama Tambien 5. Indiana Jones and the Raider's of the Lost Ark 6. The 400 Blows 7. The Life Aquatic... 8. The Shining 9. All About My Mother 10. Breathless...

Television:

Baseball. The Simpsons. Seinfeld. Otherwise, I generally view television as evil and addictive. I try not to let myself fall into its sweet blue glow.

Books:

Recently, I've read and liked Stacey Richter and Junot Diaz. Also, recently I really love Miranda July.

Read this story: "The Shared Patio" .

Here's a quote from another story, "Making Love in 2003":

People are always breaking through, like in the Doors song 'Break on Through (To the Other Side)'. But I really had. I had broken through twice now, and my feeling about the universe was that it was porous and radical and you could turn it on, you could even fuck around with the universe.

Heroes:

My wife: she saved my life, again.

Crazy Joy: A Christmas Blog

I'm not a big fan of the song "Joy to the World". I hear someone sing it and I feel suddenly angry. I especially hate when they sing the first note: Joy! It strikes me as over the top, a sort of shove...

The Unbearable Lightness of Triumph

"Life is too important to be taken seriously," writes Oscar Wilde. I love this quote because it playfully denies itself. If life is too important, how can it not be taken seriously? After all, we ten...
