The unique musical fare of Spatial Effects sets them apart from traditional bluegrass bands. Spatial Effects is a musical meld of individuals that each bring something into the mix. Their brand of bluegrass music includes several degrees in music, creativity, tradition, and a sometimes
off–the-wall sense of humor.Earl Brackin and David Crawford both graduated with degrees in music education and have had teaching experience. Brackin who currently serves as a the music minister for Evangelical Methodist Church, has taught music in both public and private schools and at one time was also involved in the production and composition of commercial jingles. He brings to Spatial Effects his many years of experience singing with Alabama based groups such as Saugahatchie (bluegrass) and Mainline (gospel). His arranging skills and keen sense of harmony have contributed to the excellent vocals of many Spatial Effects songs.David Crawford who has served as a middle school band teacher, has had a variety of musical experiences. He has played with the 8th Regimental Brass Band (a Civil War re-enactors band), the Rome Symphony, and with the Roman Festival Brass. Crawford has written and co-written many of the novelty tunes and more serious songs that Spatial Effects has become known for. He has also directed church choirs and composed and arranged music for church services.Tom Brown has played banjo and harmonica with several bluegrass groups including The Flatland Pickers (South Carolina) and The Dirt Road Band. Growing up in a musical household combined with his interest in blues has helped to shape his approach to playing the banjo. His compositions which he refers to as slightly bent bluegrass add to the band’s unique style.
Though the group identifies itself primarily with the genre of traditional bluegrass music, their performances often incorporate elements from many other styles of music. Most of Spatial Effects repertoire is composed of original songs which they often refer to as “slightly bent bluegrass.†These slightly bent songs range from variations of standard themes, as in the case of If You Sink Your Love a twist on mountain murder ballads. Many of the songs performed by Spatial Effects were written by Brown and Crawford for a two act musical entitled “Fat Shirley’s: A Trailer Park Opera,†which was staged at Dalton Little Theatre in February 2005. Brown and Crawford were among the showcased songwriters at the 2003 and 2004 International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) World of Bluegrass trade shows.
