On the trip they recorded their second album at Daptone Studios in Brooklyn (Soul capitol of the USA and Home of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings).
Needless to say, during the recording sessions much rum was drunk, Brooklyn late night spots got worked very hard and a few of our Dap-friends dropped in to help out with percussion and horns.
They say New York is the centre of the universe and it kind of feels like it when the guy mixing your record (ie Gabe Roth aka Bosco Mann) wins a Grammy for his work on the Amy Winehouse record at Daptone at the very moment he is lying on the floor hitting an 8 track machine with a hammer to get it going in order to record a Sunshine Brothers drunken jam.
It was at this time the Brothers realized that Gabe is possibly is the coolest guy in the world .. keep putting his soul up!
The new album GREENPOINT will be out soon. Around 15 new Sunshine Brothers tracks recorded on the fat and fantastic old-school 8 track analogue machine at Daptone.
Much richer and deeper than the first album REBEL YELLOW the new album features classic Brothers atmospheric instrumentals like Dub Reckoning, jammy trippers like My, slow and soulful skanking singalongs like Temporary Holiday and party burners like Tugboat and Adelaide (Wet Garden Dub).
For those checking out the Brothers for the first time here’s the background.
The Sunshine Brothers like to live excessively but always keep the place swaying with their organic dubbed out combination of bass, drums, piano, trumpet, melodica, guitar and the occasional vocal and a big rack of delays and effects.
They’ve been playing around for 3 or 4 years and their debut album REBEL YELLOW is available through inertia and all dub/reggae-wise stores in Australia/NZ.
The Sunshine Brothers love to play live more than anything and they’ve shared stages in Australia with Lily Allen, Roni Size, Fat Freddys Drop, Cat Empire, Salmonella Dub, Xavier Rudd, Beastie Boys, Ernest Ranglin, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Soul Jazz Sound System, Beautiful Girls, Arrested Development, Roots Manuva, Cornerstone Roots, Gomez, Amp Fiddler and more.
You may have also seen them at festivals like Good Vibrations, Adelaide Festival, Perth International Arts Festival, Cairns Reggae Festival, Wave Rock Weekender, Southern Arts and Soul Festival, Spring Fever, Soundsplash NZ, Wignalls and Margaret River Reggae Festival.
Extensive touring will follow the release of the new album and they hope to revisit all the towns they’ve played so far and more so watch out Perth, Sydney, Brisbane, Cairns, Melbourne, Adelaide, London, Oxford, Brighton, New York, Raglan, Bunbury, Hyden, Margaret River, Dunsborough, Denmark, Albany, Broome, Rottnest Island, Wollongong and anyone else who’ll have them.
Dub/reggae is the last form of rebel music standing and the Brothers play it with pride, power, smiles and almost uncomfortable honesty – always doing their best to do their own heads in and as well as yours! GREENPOINT out soon.
See you soon.
