Born in Chicago and raised in Evanston, Illinois, Sabrey Smith was surrounded by the music he has now perfected. Hip hop was everywhere, in the parks, on the radio, and even as his mother brought him to service on Sundays, he was thus christened into the game watching the freestyle techniques of the aspiring emcees that had congregated behind the church building. But neutral observation was brief, and by the time he helped to found the Billa Click in 2000, Sabrey was one of the most acclaimed and influential rappers in the Chicago underground, especially in his native Evanston. Put simply, his originality, versatility, creative vision and technical dexterity are incomparable, and perhaps no other rappers name evokes truth of technique as Sabrey suggests the razor sharp quality of his work. It is grammatically complex, interspersed with a wide variety of slang from the Caribbean, the East Cost, the South and of course Chicago. His subject matter and references are broad, a reflection of his well traveled past and varied cultural influences born into Chicagos Haitian community, an athlete, awarded acclaim and scholarship offers for his academic pursuits, impoverished, hustling, working, living the night life, and finally, coming to DC to record his vision with a voice he was constantly developing. Upon study, his work reveals a depth of meaning, open for multiple interpretations, which is largely lost in todays rap game. And with that technique, formed from a past in the university and the drug game, in the projects and in the plushest homes, he brings hip hop relevance lost in the mass appeal candy rappers that have been boring you on the radio.
