is recruiting for enactors to bring history alive at Ft Tejon. The 79th NY served in the Union Army during the Civil War and was made up of Scottish immigrants who were noted for their colorful attire and hard fighting, sometimes wearing trewes and Glengarries , even kilts when on parade. Many where veterans who had seen service in the Crimean War, only to return home to Scotland and fine nothing left after the clearances. Of course, their Highland spirit made them excellent soldiers. In fact, so greatly were they esteemed that General Sherman specifically requested the regiment be attached to his command.Enactors re-enact living history at Ft. Tejon near Lebec on the third Sunday April through October. We are looking for men and women to portray this time period. In fact even children can partake, except that battlefield participants must be 13 or older. We would like to have a wide spectrum of the community portraying life of the period represented with civilians and soldiers. Of particular interest are musicians, as music was a very important part of daily life in the camp and the township. In camp music with fiddle, mandolin, guitar, flute and harmonica as well as the more marshal music of Drum and Bugle on the fieldAnother area of interest is the culinary delights of the 1860’s field kitchens.
A well-fed soldier is a happy soldier and so we are recruiting for a dedicated commissariat-cook, able to present a feast from the camp Dutch ovens. This is an essential part of the living history and one that the public always find of interest.Upcoming Civil War events at Fort Tejon State Historic Park
