O U R _ I S S U E:
Our primary concern is financially assisting college students in an effort to help them complete their educational goals. Just 54% of students entering four-year colleges in 1997 had a degree six years later — and even fewer Hispanics and blacks did, according to some of the latest government figures. After borrowing for school but failing to graduate, many of those students may be worse off than if they had never attended college at all.
Overall, the federal figures report 57% of white students finish their degree, compared with 44% of Hispanics and 39% of blacks.
A recent report by the Education Trust warned that "hundreds of thousands of young people leave our higher education system unsuccessfully, burdened with large student loans that must be repaid, but without the benefit of the wages a college degree provides.
O U R _ G O A L:
In an effort to circumvent some of these realities, WE ARE RAISING FUNDS to:
1. Give away (at least) 6 scholarships ranging from $250-$1,000 to help individuals; (1) get into college, (2) transfer to a 4 year college and (3)remain in college, by providing financial assistance.
2. Create a interest in poetic expression and have each individual to not only think about their current situation, but how they have elevated or can elevate themselves/others further.
3. Expose and promote Spoken Word Artists in an academic setting.
WANT TO DONATE $$, SEND AN EMAIL TO [email protected]
O U R _ D R E A M:
1. Thousands of students all over the Inland Empire will sit down and think about their present and their future. They'll write out possible goals and dreams as a first step to actualizing them.
2. Students who don't have access to open mic venues will come by the hundreds to be heard and to hear people who look like them, and sound like them. Some of Spoken Words finest will exemplify to the younger generation that it's cool to be intelligent, articulant and fly...and it's not a contradiction.
3. These students will be hooked on the art of self expression and open mics will spring up all over the Inland Empire, providing positive outlets for our youth!
4. The high school and college students will be exposed to the art of Spoken Word and have access to purchase CDs directly from the artist.
5. Professors will understand how significant and supplemental Spoken Word and Spoken Word artists can be to their cirriculum as guest lecturers.
WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU IF YOU'RE NOT IN THE CONTEST?
1. You'll get to see, live and in person, some of the most cavalier Spoken Word artists in the industry!
2. You'll be witnessing HISTORY! Never has a Greek Organization collaborated with Spoken Word artists and given away Scholarships on this level!!
3.You'll have access to CDS/TShirts/BOOKS and other merchandise from some of the Dopest Spoken Word artist on the planet!!
4. You'll find out about upcoming shows and venues. You can join mailing lists and stay informed about your favorite artists.
