Rock is very much alive. This is proven with the sound produced by the Los Angeles based rock band 65 OverDrive formerly known as The Black I’s. In early 2003 singer, David Esqueda and lead guitarist, Cesar Michel joked about starting a band, but it quickly became a reality. David immediately contacted his cousin Enrique Esqueda. They had worked together on previous projects, which really played a part in Enrique’s decision to join and play drums for the band. In order to complete the band one key element was still missing: the bass player. The puzzle was completed when David bumped into bassist, Benny Gutierrez, while attending college. Since they had known each other in high school, David felt comfortable enough to invite Benny to join the band. Benny quickly agreed and 65 OverDrive was off and running. Initially, they focused on playing cover songs from bands they admired like Social Distortion and The Ramones. The band quickly put together an array of songs that have many comparing them to a high-energy version of The Strokes.
During the late 2006 performance schedule, 65 OverDrive experienced personnel changes. 65’s bassist Benny Gutierrez departed to pursue his educational endeavors as a firefighter. In December of 2006, 65 OD acquired bassist Jose “JOE X†Alaniz from a musician’s ad posted at the Stardust Club. Later in 2007, Rob Orozco was recruited to assume rhythm guitar duties.
65 OverDrive is categorized under the genre of Rock which is evident from their musical influences such as The Ramones, AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses, Social Distortion, The Datsuns, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, The Who, The Doors, MC5, Led Zeppelin, The Clash and The Rolling Stones. These influences serve as the foundation for the rock sound that is 65 OverDrive. It is the perfect name for the guitar driven, classic distortion style of music produced by 65 OverDrive. Their song list includes the crowd favorites SHOCKWAVE and ONE LAST THRILL as well as LIGHTS OUT, FIREBIRD, LIVE TODAY DIE TOMMORROW, GONE FOR GOOD, SON OF THE DAMNED and YOUNG BLOOD.
