Gordon Goodwin's Summer Jazz Camp Promo
..There is nothing like a big band in full roar. As a force of power and precision, these unique musical entities have been a vehicle of modern jazz expression for nearly a century. Today Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band carries the big band tradition into the new millennium. One of the most exciting large jazz ensembles on the planet, Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band creates a contemporary, highly original sound that features Gordon’s witty, intricate and swinging compositions in a veritable grab bag of styles: swing, latin, blues, classical, rock…even an homage to Looney Tunes. They are all captured on three critically-acclaimed and Grammy-nominated CDs…and soon to be a fourth.Gordon’s uncanny ability to combine jazz excellence with any musical style is one reason his writing appeals to everyone from beboppers to headbangers. Since childhood a steady, persistent audio diet of the giants of jazz, pop, rock and funk nourished Gordo’s musical soul…and fed the well. The music of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Buddy Rich, Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, Earth, Wind and Fire, and Tower of Power--among many others—has made Gordo into a writer and musician with a bold, unique vision and hard-swinging style. The Big Phat Band is populated by the best L.A. musicians, several of whom have distinguished themselves as recording artists and soloists in the jazz field. Matt Weisberg
Despite being a very recent addition to the Los Angeles area, Matt Weisberg is already a prominent figure in the widely varied music scene. At just 24 years of age, Weisberg is making a name for himself as an in-demand jazz pianist, composer, educator, multi-instrumentalist session musician, and producer. In addition to playing keyboards for Latin pop star, Estefano, Matt has shared the stage with several notable musicians, and the list grows every day. Ira Sullivan, Brian Lynch, Bill Watrous, Eric Marienthal, Sal Lozano, Pete Christlieb, Ramon Banda, Nolan Shaheed, John Heard, and Roy Mccurdy, just to name a few.At age 4, Weisberg started his musical journey. Matt studied classical and pop songs on the piano until his teen years, when he added guitar to his musical arsenal. Matt was influenced by the usual rock/blues guitar gods like Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton, but was also drawn to the technical mastery of some of the more esoteric "shred" players, such as Yngwie Malmsteen and Shawn Lane.Matt was convinced that playing rock guitar was going to be his life's work until his first exposure to jazz at a Berklee College of Music summer camp. Weisberg was enticed by the sounds of Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, and Oscar Peterson, and decided to further pursue it in a university setting. Within eight months he was a competent jazz pianist and received a scholarship to study at the acclaimed University of Miami's school of music. In Miami, Matt had the opportunity to hone his skills with some of the best educators in the world. After his stint in South Florida, Matt made the move to the West Coast in late '05. He teaches and produces music out of his home studio, which includes a Yamaha C1 grand piano.Vocals
