Coronado Big Band

About Me

..
The CBB was formed in 1997 as a local community band and was originally intended to give high school students a band to play in that was unavailable at the school level. Over the years those students moved on and older local musicians started joining. The chart list was growing, musicians rotated in and out of open chairs and within a few years, the band was enjoying a solid group of great players.
The next few years saw some personnel and director changes and is now floureshing as San Diego's best unknown big band. That's right, we're relatively unknown to the general public because the band rarely played outside of Coronado but this is changing. We've had performances at Dizzy's jazz club downtown San Diego and we're going to be playing at Balboa Park for their twilight concert series. Of course we still play at our usual local hangouts, the Coronado Ferry Landing and Coronado's summer concert series at Spreckles Park. We have also played for corporate and private events such as weddings, dances, banquets and fundraising events.
We rehearse every Tuesday night at Coronado High School and our book contains charts written and/or performed and/or recorded by Gordon Goodwin, Sammy Nestico, Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Neal Hefti, Bill Hollman, Charlie Parker, Buddy Rich, Lennie Neihaus, Tom Kubis and many more.
The band is available for hire so please inquire within if you are interested in having us play for your next event.

This is what influences us the most. The sound of the Count Basie Orchestra is unique and is something we try to match. Enjoy this clip of Jerry Lewis in the movie Errand Boy.

Influences: Being a big band our influences come from the past 60 years of swing and big band music that has stood the test of time. Sure, there are other music styles being played in mainstream radio today but there are several jazz radio stations that still play swing/big band and not only do we get to listen to this music, we get to play it. How cool is that?
Check THIS out--------

Sounds Like: The sound of a live big band has no equal. If you've never heard a big band play in person, then you have never truely heard what REAL music is. It's thought provoking, it's excilerating, it's excitement on a stage. The sound of a live big band has no equal.

Record Label: Boy, wouldn't THAT be cool?

A couple of year end thoughts

Well, the CBB is fairly quiet these days.  That is, with regard to gigs.  It's a good thing really as trying to schedule a gig somewhere with 17 musicians that also play with other groups is...

Overwelming

I am overwelmed by the responses to our music and our performances.  Seriously, I've had countless strangers tell me how wonderful the band is after our most recent concerts.  These comments...

Busy busy busy...things things things...rambling rambling rambling.

So the summer of 2008 has been chock full of gigs.  Every month at the Coronado Ferry Landing, Coronado Flower Show, Balboa Park, Grossmont Center, Spreckles Park and a wedding in Temecula. ...

New music

This was recorded outside at a gig we had on July 17, 2007.  Unfortunately, it was near to impossible to have Janet be close to the recording mics so that's why she seems distant.  We will b...

Just where is this "Ferry Landing" anyway?

As you come off the Coronado Bay Bridge, you turn right on B Ave. and it dead-ends right at the Ferry Landing Marketplace on 1st Street.  The CBB plays right in front of Kaffeen's coffee cart whi...
