This is the March 2007 update. Things change and I got called out for not having an updated profile. So alas, here we go with a new one.I live in Tainan, Taiwan. I have been here a little over four years now. The pollution is starting to kill me, though. (Really) So I am thinking of getting out soon. I haven't yet because I love teaching English to Taiwanese kids. Taiwanese kids are much more innocent than their western counterparts which makes them more fun. I didn't realize how much I enjoyed teaching until I was offered a very well paying job three months ago which would have meant me quitting. I was faced with the age old dilemma... money or happiness. I chose happiness.
I think most Taiwanese teachers are incredibly boring and don't know how to inspire students or make learning fun. It is a rewarding job to know I am doing this and seeing my passions turn into theirs. It's pretty cool to be given 20 kids that don't understand a word you are saying and 2 years later to be able to have a conversation with them.
I have been doing DJ bookings for Neotribe Records for the last 8 years or so. I am taking a break though because I just can't stoop to bringing in DJs that play top 40 to appease the Taiwanese clubbers. When the locals start getting over their unhealthy obsession with all things MTV, I will get back into the bookings game.
I am a traveler, a student of life, a practical joker, a music lover and a trouble maker. I don't take life too seriously, as it is too short for that. I am spiritual but not religious. I love writing and cartooning. My stuff is regulary published in Xpat Magazine and occasionally in South Magazine. I spend most of my time smiling and trying to make others do the same. I am outspoken and extraverted which can cause rifts with people.
If I like you, love you or hate you- I'm going to tell you. Personally, I would rather someone tell me they hate me then do it behind my back. So I practice what I preach. I am cocky but not a dick.I find anything to do with pirates, dinosaurs or ninjas REALLY amusing. Moreover, I get really sick pleasure out of scaring my friends and then spend hours laughing to myself at the look on their faces. I owe this obsession to my father, who probably scared me once a week for the first 12 years of my life. My little sister, who I love to death, is the most hysterical person alive in my eyes. And the only person I have drank dish soap for to cheer up.I played too hard in my teens and early 20s and am now paying for it badly. Snowboarding, hockey, aggressive inline skating, martial arts and just being plain stupid has resulted in me destroying pretty much all of my joints and spinal cord. I don't know anyone who has broken more bones than me. Sweet. So now, I need to work out at least 4 days a week or the discs in my lower back blow out.I love dancing a lot and go out to clubs to dance and hear good DJs play good music. Not to drink or pick up women.I love shopping more than any straight man I know and have six closets full of clothes to prove it. I love tattoos, and am looking to get more. I just can't figure out which I want next. I played the piercing game in university but have removed all of them except one in each ear. Which I will probably have until I die.Since arriving in Taiwan, I have been accused several times by other foreigners of being a snob. I am not a snob. I just don't see a need to hang out with other foreigners just because they are white. I wouldn't have hung out with most of these people back in Canada, why the hell am I going to fly to the other side of the world and spend time with them.I hate politics but love discussing them. Don't get me started on US Foreign Policy, Taiwanese Domestic Policy, France's hypocricy, and China's world power goals. All are scary and frustrate me to no end.I adore women. I was pretty much raised by my mother, who to this day is my best friend. She has given me a woman's perspective on most things. Which I think is a good thing. I recently married an amazing woman who is the exact opposite of me in just about every way. She balances me out well though. I needed the grounding. I got married early because I love kids and really want to have babies! How weird is that hey? No babies yet though. ;( Just two retarded cats.Anyways, that is my update.
