About Me

I have changed one of my groups name from Helping people and dogs in China and around the world to Helping people and dogs around the world . The name change was prompted because we are planning to soon do battle with several large United States organizations and I want to use this group to build a following of people interested in helping to save the lives of many, many dogs right here in the United States.

To all my writing friends, I am looking to buy original articles about the pet dogs’ role in society, dog care and maintenance, dog training, and how to be a responsible dog owner.
Basically I am looking for substantial articles about the pet dog lifestyle. I am not interested in articles written to primarily market a product or service. This is a very low paying assignment, but at least you will make a little. I would imagine it is more than writing a myspace blog.

Working on getting a book published. The goal is to help people discover how observing our dogs can give us the necessary insight to lead good lives. As we lead good lives it will be easier to help others that are less fortunate than we are. As we begin to consider the welfare of others as well as ourselves we will move towards a world of sustainable humanity.

For my California dog friends looking to talk about nonprofit status, dogs in China, breed specific legislation, and dog training.

Would my California dog friends like to get together offline to talk about dogs and maybe do a little training? I would also like to get some suggestion and help on how to start a nonprofit. We may also discuss possible actions we can take to help the dogs in China and prevent breed specific legislation. There are a host of other ideas I would like to run by a group as well.
If you have any questions or suggestions please let me know. Like life, my programs are in a constant state of change and evolution.
Thank you all for your interest
I am also looking for dog professional link partners for the dog training website. To get your link just put a link on your website going to mine with a short description.

I do not list all sites submitted, and at this time I am not linking to myspace pages. This is a hand edited directory so I go through each site looking at content and checking links. I usually do not list sites promoting .. training material and/or e training books. Websites should also be dog related.

I'd like to meet:

I would like to meet dog trainers and dog owners who are interested in applying the wisdom of Chinese and Japanese philosophy and physical arts to the art of dog training. I am also taking on new apprentices, so if you would like to learn the profession of dog training, drop me a line. Eventually I will also be looking for someone to take over my training practice or at least parts of it.

Looking to network and make friends with other dog owners, writers, people who would like to stop hatred, teachers especially those teaching biology, anatomy, life science, geography, Mandarin writers and speakers, and doctors or life science teachers who can fluently write Chinese.
I would also like to meet people in the entertainment industry that can teach me how to make helping more entertaining. This is because it seems that making the world a better place is not nearly as entertaining as making it worse.

I found an illustrator to work with. Thank you myspace. I also found a video person to work with for the new video projects.

I have met a lot of great people on myspace. In addition I have met and worked with some excellent professionals who I have met here. I also have been able to help some of my myspace friend in very meaningful ways. This networking experiment is now going to switch direction.

I would like to meet all the environmentally conscious and socially responsible people on myspace who share a common interest with me. Many of my interests are listed under general. The areas I’m involved in, primarily involves dogs, education, and the entertainment industry.

Something you can do to clean up pet food companies

You can help Clean Up The Pet Food Supply
Senator Durbin, America, and our pets need your help to clean up the pet food companies.
Now there is something each and everyone of us can do to help sooth the helpless outrage we all feel by the greedy corporate deceit that threatens us and our furry friends. Senator Durbin has a form on his website were we can send the FDA a letter asking them to clean up not only their act but the food supply too.
Here is the letter from Senator Durbin’s website You can also send an email to the FDA right from the form on his site. Very easy and quick. If enough people do this it will give the FDA an urgent reason to take ACTION.
============= For more than 100 million Americans, a cat or dog is part of the family. That's why the recent pet food contamination crisis, a tragedy that has led to the illness or deaths of thousands of pets across the country, has hit so close to home.
Recently, I spearheaded a Senate Committee hearing to find out what went wrong -- why contaminated pet food made its way into the food supply, and how we can make sure it never happens again. So far, we've learned that the response of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been wholly inadequate.
That is why I hope that you will forward an email to FDA Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach -- tell him that it's time for the FDA to improve the safety of our pet food supply now! CLICK HERE TO EMAIL FDA

HANG IN THERE,CHAMP AND EVON.

From chiquita's mom
hi ,chiquita's mom here,I went by my vet today and asked what I should feed that's safe, they said keep feeding Innova (dry) and that the Paul Newman brand organic canned has not been recalled and so far is safe,as long as the stuff has no wheat gluetin or any kind of wheat products at all even goodies and dog bones...I was going to make my own food and they said I shouldn't because it doesn't have all the vitimans and nutrients in the right amounts even if you add a multi vitiman...so I don't know I guess I'll do that ,but it is very scary ,they recalled a bunch of dog bones yesterday,Wal-mart brand and others.

A yummy large breakfast meal
Ingredients
3 Eggs
1/2 C Skim milk
1 Cooked chicken breast
1 C Light cream
1 C Uncooked broccoli
1/2 C Uncooked parlsey
1 C Uncooked oatmeal
Small portion cheese (optional)
Directions
This is for one large dog. Rearrange the measurments according to your dog's size and food needs.
1. Crack eggs and pour them into a container (keep shells for later). Pour the 1/2 cup of skim milk in with the eggs. Beat the eggs and milk together with a fork until the mixture foams.
2. Collect the cooked chicken breast (remove bones if it isn't boneless), the brocolli, the parsley, the oatmeal and the cream, and the egg shells and put them in the blender. Blend well.
3. Put the chicken mixture in a bowl and put in the microwave for 40 seconds.
4. While the chciken mixture is in the microwave, put the egg mixture in a frying pan. Fry and stir constantly until cooked.
5. Take the chicken mixture out of the microwave and stir. Put it back in for another 20-30 seconds.
6. Put the scrambled eggs in a bowl. Let the chicken mixture cool, and then pour it on top of the eggs. Cover with more fresh parsley and a very small portion of shredded cheese (cheddar is best) for flavour.
7. Serve to your pooch and watch him/her gobble it up!
NOTE: This recipe is not intended for the only meal of the day. It does not have all of the necessary requirements for a healthy dog. It needs to be supplemented with other meals at other times of the day. This meal should also not be given to an overweight dog, as it will not help in the losing of weight

Bones and raw food diet. This is a raw, healthy, delicious chicken dinner for dogs.
Ingredients
Raw chicken wings
1 Scoop cottage cheese
Grated carrot
Directions
Toss this in the chow bowl and watch your dog get healthy!!!
Never cook any meats or veggies or fruits that you feed your dog.
Get the book called..."GIVE YOUR DOG A BONE"...
And for those of you that believe the myths about dogs and food poisoning....get over it!!!
A big, raw, meaty bone is served later. This is the dogs tooth brush. Never feed a cooked bone...they splinter...then your baby is in trouble!
Some dried kelp can be sprinkled on top...just a little bit!!!

From Kristen & The Muttley Crew

I make my animals their food. When I first started I used recipes but I dont really anymore. Occasionally I cook them something but mostly I raw feed. Chicken necks & backs. Turkey necks for dogs. Beef & chicken livers, beef hearts. Ground beef & turkey. Big hunks of meat (any kind really) that they can rip & tear before eating. Cornish game hens fed whole. I give veggies maybe twice a week or so in the ground meat. Either canned veg-all or raw veggies blended in blender to a pulp. They love it all. And sometimes canned fish, usually mackeral. It's really quite easy to feed this way. All the poisoned pet food is really scary isnt it? Well I like your page & I hope this helps. -Kristen

From Carrie

I feed my dogs "Eagle Pack Holistic Select". Other foods that do not contain Wheat Gluten that are all Super Premium foods are. "Azmira", "Wellness", "Canidae", "Inova", "Merrick's", "Advanced Pet Diet's (APD)", I believe all these foods are all made in the United States only and NO ingredients are shipped from other countries. All of these foods can be found at most specialty pet food stores. You cannot find them a Petco or Petsmart. All these foods are sold at the pet store I work at and they are the top selling foods over Nutro, Science Diet, Eukanuba, and Iams. Before the recall all the foods on the recall list have always expired on the shelf because hardly anyone buys these foods where I work. "Eagle Pack" is the #1 food that sells out where I work.

From Sarah

Hi Andrew, I feed my dog what ever I am eating. If I make chicken, or meatloaf, or even take out. I share with my dog and he loves it.
Sarah and
Chewbackah.

From GOT ASSphalt????

WELL...I feed my dogs everything I eat....mostly chicken, rice, and vegtables. They love it, and if it can keep me going for 100 years, It must not be that awful! I fed my amstaff table scraps until his he passed @ 19 years old! I had never bought one bag or can of DOG FOOD his entire life! Yet he was the healthiest dog I ever OWNED!

From Kim

Our vet told us to feed our puppy rice, chicken and cheese. So now we just keep it stocked in the fridge. She also eats science diet dry food. It is not on either of the recall lists. I was also wondering what other people are feeding their dogs so a bulletin giving suggestions would be awsome! :)

From Agility 1

There are many ultra premium foods available on the market. My dogs eat Innova Evo and C & P Organix. Neither
The T's Have It!

I Shop at specialty shops, boutiques. Typically run by Rescues or Non Profit Organizations. They only purchase foods that are organic, holisitic and natural.
Raw food diet is also a wonderful, easy way to get your pets all the nutrients that need without needing kibble. 90% protien, 5%vegtables, 5%vitamins (as close as I can recall right now) :) This is great for folks who need an alternative to cooking. From freezer to frige to thaw and feed..that simple!

From Missy from Raven Tattoo Care

This is so sad, like it will never end. I am going back to giving my pets raw meat diets, home made.

A comment about Royal Canine
(Just to clarify RC Dog is not named after this food)

From Whiskey Kennels

Date: Apr 21, 2007 7:17 AMHi, I noitced that the puppy 32 and the German Shepherd mixes were not listed as part of the recall.. BUT just to be sure I called and talked to a representitive and was assured that neither of these products was part of the recall as they do NOT contain the rice.. So anyone feeding either of these from Royal Canine are safe to continue to use.. (till the next recall??) I am having little faith in any dog food at the moment! :( Anyway, thought I would let you know.. in case you wanted to pass it on.. Sherri.

Low Protein Recipes

From Rachel

But as far as I can remember what they need is meat (raw is best because it contains fresh enzymes, but my dog won't eat it unless it's cooked. And you can freeze it first if you are afraid of bacteria but it may kill some of the enzymes too, not sure). Fresh vegetables, lightly cooked (no corn - difficult to digest, my dog likes chopped carrots and green beans), and then some kind of grain like rice or couscous is great! I also throw in a tablespoon of uncooked oatmeal occasionally. It seems to keep her regular, and her stool from getting too runny. As far as low protein I would imagine white meat chicken would be the best. The ingredient that dogs need that is NOT in people food is bone meal. Which is why I still have her on a very good dry food as well. But I believe egg shells can be used as a substitute for that.To save time I usually make a large batch and freeze it in serving size baggies. Suppertime I pull a baggy out heat it up and go. Makes it easier in case someone else has to feed her for me too.Either way, I'm not a vet, nor am I a doctor... So these are just suggestions. I would recommend picking up a few books on the subject first.Good luck!...Rachel

From Ms. Sheela Storm

was actually reading some online recipes that consisted of basically just rice and ground beef with a little cheese and baking meatballs out of them.

From Dakota

i found castor and pollux to be a wonderful organic food, although pricey.for most dogs, the best thing is raw hamburger, raw veggies and if you want to add grains, cooked brown rice.raw bones and meat are better on their system than cooked foods.my dog is Dalmatian so i have to avoid high purine foods like organ meats and poultry is best for her.ground turkey, turkey necks, raw eggs, veggies.. all good for dogs!

From Jack The ManDog

This is the restricted protein diet from Hill's. I'm cooking it now for a dog who was on Hill's k/d prior to the food recall. The vet. gave it to me after he sent all of his dog food back to the company. It's very simple.
1/4 lb. ground beef (do not use lean round chuck) 2 cups cooked long grain white rice without salt 1 hard cooked egg, finely chopped 3 slices of crumbled white bread 1 t (5g) calcium carbonate (may substitute 7 Tums EX tablets)
Also add one vitamin/mineral tab such as a Pet Tab.
Cook beef in skillet, stirring until lightly browned. Stir in remaining ingredients and mix well. Keep covered in refrigerator. Yield 1 1/4 pounds.
Protein 6.9% Fat 5.5% Carbohydrate 21.1% Moisture 65.5% Metabolizable Energy 750 Kcal/lb
This diet supplies 17% protein calories, 30% fat calories, and 53% carbohydrate calories.
Feed sufficient amount to maintain normal body weight.
I also have Hill's Canine Ultra-Low Protein Diet which supplies 8% protein calories.
Another source for home cooked diets including reduced protein diets etc. is Donald Strombeck DVM's book Home-Prepared Dog and Cat Diets The Healthful Alternative

----------------- Bulletin Message ----------------- From: PugsNPals Date: Oct 25, 2007 3:16 PMNew Vaccination Protocols in America
Dr. Dodd's vaccination protocol is now being adopted by ALL 27 North
American veterinary schools. I highly recommend that you read this. Copy
and save it to your files. Print it and pass it out at dog fairs, cat
shows, kennel club meetings, dog parks, give a copy to your veterinarian
and groomer, etc.
Get the word out. ~~~~
VACCINATION NEWS FLASH
I would like to make you aware that all 27 veterinary schools in North
America are in the process of changing their protocols for vaccinating
dogs and cats. Some of this information will present an ethical &
economic challenge to vets, and there will be skeptics.
Some organizations have come up with a political compromise suggesting
vaccinations every 3 years to appease those who fear loss of income vs.
those concerned about potential side effects. Politics, traditions, or
the doctor's economic well being should not be a factor in medical
decision.
NEW PRINCIPLES OF IMMUNOLOGY
"Dogs and cats immune systems mature fully at 6 months. If a modified
live virus vaccine is given after 6 months of age, it produces an
immunity which is good for the life of the pet (ie: canine distemper,
parvo, feline distemper). If another MLV vaccine is given a year later,
the antibodies from the first vaccine neutralize the antigens of the
second vaccine and there is little or no effect. The titer is not
"boosted" nor are more memory cells induced." Not only are annual
boosters for parvo and distemper unnecessary, they subject the pet to
potential risks of allergic reactions and immune-mediated hemolytic
anemia. "There is no scientific documentation to back up label claims
for annual administration of MLV vaccines." Puppies receive antibodies
through their mothers milk. This natural protection can last 8-14 weeks.
Puppies & kittens should NOT be vaccinated at LESS than 8 weeks.
Maternal immunity will neutralize the vaccine and little protection
(0-38%) will be produced. Vaccination at 6 weeks will, however, delay
the timing of the first highly effective vaccine. Vaccinations given 2
weeks apart suppress rather than stimulate the immune system. A series of
vaccinations is given starting at 8 weeks and given 3-4 weeks apart up
to 16 weeks of age. Another vaccination given sometime after 6 months of
age (usually at 1 year 4 mo) will provide lifetime immunity.
CURRENT RECOMMENDATIONS FOR DOGS
Distemper & Parvo
"According to Dr. Schultz, AVMA, 8-15-95, when a vaccinations series
given at 2, 3 & 4 months and again at 1 year with a MLV, puppies and
kitten program memory cells that survive for life, providing lifelong
immunity." Dr. Carmichael at Cornell and Dr. Schultz have studies
showing immunity against challenge at 2-10 years for canine distemper &
4 years for parvovirus. Studies for longer duration are pending. "There
are no new strains of parvovirus as one mfg. would like to suggest.
Parvovirus vaccination provides cross immunity for all types." Hepatitis
(Adenovirus) is one of the agents known to be a cause of kennel cough.
Only vaccines with CAV-2 should be used as CAV- 1 vaccines carry the risk
of "hepatitis blue-eye" reactions & kidney damage.
Bordetella Parainfluenza: Commonly called "Kennel cough" Recommended
only for those dogs boarded, groomed, taken to dog shows, or for any
reason housed where exposed to a lot of dogs. The intranasal vaccine
provides more complete and more rapid onset of immunity with less chance
of reaction. Immunity requires 72 hours and does not protect from every
cause of kennel cough. Immunity is of short duration (4 to 6 months).
RABIES
There have been no reported cases of rabid dogs or cats in Harris,
Montogomery or Ft. Bend Counties [Texas], there have been rabid skunks
and bats so the potential exists. It is a killed vaccine and must be
given every year.
Lyme disease is a tick born disease which can cause lameness, kidney
failure and heart disease in dogs. Ticks can also transmit the disease
to humans. The original Ft. Dodge killed bacteria has proven to be the
most effective vaccine. Lyme disease prevention should emphasize early
removal of ticks. Amitraz collars are more effective than Top Spot, as
amitraz paralyzes the tick's mouth parts preventing transmission of
disease.
VACCINATIONS NOT RECOMMENDED
Multiple components in vaccines compete with each other for the immune
system and result in lesser immunity for each individual disease as well
as increasing the risk of a reaction. Canine Corona Virus is only a
disease of puppies. It is rare, self limiting (dogs get well in 3 days
without treatment). Cornell & Texas A&M have only diagnosed one case
each in the last 7 years. Corona virus does not cause disease in adult
dogs.
Leptospirosis vaccine is a common cause of adverse reactions in dogs.
Most of the clinical cases of lepto reported in dogs in the US are
caused by serovaars (or types) grippotyphosa and bratsilvia. The vaccines
contain different serovaars eanicola and ictohemorrhagica. Cross
protection is not provided and protection is short lived. Lepto vaccine
is immuno-supressive to puppies less than 16 weeks.
NEW RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CATS
Feline vaccine related Fibrosarcoma is a type of terminal cancer related
in inflammation caused by rabies & leukemia vaccines. This cancer is
thought to affect 1 in 10,000 cats vaccinated. Vaccines with aluminum
adjuvant, an ingredient included to stimulate the immune system, have
been implicated as a higher risk. We now recommend a non-adjuvanted
rabies vaccine for cats. Testing by Dr. Macy, Colorado State, has shown
this vaccine to have the lowest tissue reaction and although there is no
guarantee that a vaccine induced sarcoma will not develop, the risk will
be much lower than with other vaccines.
Program injectable 6 mo flea prevention for cats has been shown to be
very tissue reactive & therefore has the potential of inducing an
injection site fiborsarcoma. If your cats develops a lump at the site of
a vaccination, we recommend that it be removed ASAP, within 3-12 weeks.
Feline Leukemia Virus Vaccine
This virus is the leading viral killer of cats. The individuals most at
risk of infection are young outdoor cats, indoor/outdoor cats and cats
exposed to such individuals. Indoor only cats with no exposure to
potentially infected cats are unlikely to become infected. All cats
should be tested prior to vaccination. Cats over one year of age are
naturally immune to Fel.V whether they are vaccinated or not, so annual
vaccination of adult cats is NOT necessary. The incubation period of
Feline leukemia can be over 3 years, so if your cat is in the incubation
state of the disease prior to vaccination, the vaccine will not prevent
the disease.
Feline Panleukopenia Virus Vaccine.
Also called feline distemper is a highly contagious and deadly viral
disease of kittens. It's extremely hardy and is resistant to extremes in
temperature and to most available disinfectants. Although an effective
treatment protocol is available, it is expensive to treat because of the
serious nature of the disease and the continued presence of virus in the
environment, vaccination is highly recommended for all kittens. Cats
vaccinated at 6 month or older with either killed or MLV vaccine will
produce an immunity good for life. Adult cats do NOT need this vaccine.
Feline Calicivirus/Herpesvirus Vaccine.
Responsible for 80-90% of infectious feline upper respiratory tract
diseases. The currently available injectable vaccines will minimize the
severity of upper respiratory infections, although none will prevent
disease in all situations.
Intranasal vaccines are more effective at preventing the disease
entirely. Don't worry about normal sneezing for a couple of days.
Because intranasal vaccines produce an immunity of shorter durations,
annual vaccination is recommended.
VACCINES NOT RECOMMENDED
Chlamydia or pneumonitis.
The vaccine produces on a short (2 month) duration of immunity and
accounts for less than 5% of upper respiratory infections in cats. The
risks outweigh the benefits.
Feline Infectious Peritonitis.
A controversial vaccine. Most kittens that contract FIP become infected
during the first 3 months of life. The vaccine is labeled for use at 16
weeks. All 27 vet schools do not recommend the vaccine.
Bordetella
A new vaccine for feline bordetella has been introduced. Dr. Wolfe of
Texas A&M says that bordetella is a normal flora and does not cause
disease in adult cats. Dr. Lappin of Colorado State says that a review
of the Colorado State medical records reveals not one case diagnosed in
10 years.
NEW DEVELOPMENTS
Giardia is the most common intestinal parasite of humans in North
America, 30% or more of all dogs & cats are infected with giardia. It
has now been demonstrated that humans can transmit giardia to dogs &
cats & vice versa.
Heartworm preventative must be given year-round in Houston.
VACCINES BADLY NEEDED
New vaccines in development include:
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus and cat scratch fever vaccine for cats and
Ehrlichia [one of the other tick diseases, much worse than Lymes] for
dogs.
THE VIEW FROM THE TRENCHES; BUSINESS ASPECTS
Most vets recommend annual boosters and most kennel operators require
them. For years the pricing structure of vets has misled clients into
thinking that the inherent value of an annual office visit was in the
"shots" they failed to emphasize the importance of a physical exam for
early detection of treatable diseases. It is my hope that you will
continue to require rabies & Kennel cough and emphasize the importance
of a recent vet exam. I also hope you will accept the new protocols and
honor these pets as currently vaccinated. Those in the boarding business
who will honor the new vaccine protocols can gain new customers who were
turned away from vet owned boarding facilities reluctant to change.
CONCLUSION
Dogs & cats no longer need to be vaccinated against distemper, parvo, &
feline leukemia every year. Once the initial series of puppy or kitten
vaccinations and first annual vaccinations are completed, immunity from
MLV vaccines persists for life. It has been shown that cats over 1 year
of age are immune to Feline Leukemia whether they have been vaccinated
or not. Imagine the money you will save, not to mention less risks from
side effects. PCR rabies vaccine, because it is not adjuvanted, will
mean less risk of mediated hemolytic anemia and allergic reactions are
reduced by less frequent use of vaccines as well as by avoiding
unnecessary vaccines such as K-9 Corona virus and chlamydia for cats, as
well as ineffective vaccines such as Leptospirosis and FIP. Intranasal
vaccine for Rhiotracheitis and Calici virus, two upper respiratory
viruses of cats provide more complete protection than injectable
vaccines with less risk of serious reactions.
The AAHA and all 27 veterinary schools of North America are our biggest
endorsement for these new protocols.

Please consider as current on all vaccinations for boarding purposes.
