About Me

As a hobby and profession I meet and engage with interesting people who make elaborate shadow puppets. I celebrate the history of these shared light flickers with others in large dark rooms.I have a snowy owl in my living room. I get bored taking the usual routes and perfer to to explore side streets and stumble across small treasures and wonders. Beats following the herd. I've walked on burning coals.
The real scoop? I used to publish a zine called Asian Eye, one of the first NA zines on HK cinema, springing out of the vibrant cult flick zine scene in Toronto (Killbaby, Trash Compactor, Subterranea, She, etc). I managaged a short lived rep cinema that only screened Asian cinema, Golden Classics Cinema. I managed the Markham Street location of Suspect Video. I ran the two Toronto editions of Fantasia. I started showing old kung fu films on 35mm at a rundown porn cinema in Toronto and this evolved into Kung Fu Fridays that came to a close on June 23, 2006 after 10 years. Since 1997 I have been programming the Midnight Madness selection of the Toronto International Film Festival. I run Ultra 8 Pictures, specializing in limited CDN theatrical releases (that have included Bubba Ho-Tep, End of the Century, A Tale of Two Sisters, Battle in Heaven), acquistition, archiving, etc.
And I am a man about town.
