What is it? Launched in October 2007, PHANTA-SCOPE: THE SECRET SINEMA SOCIETY OF TORONTO is a monthly members only film screening series that will take place in a top secret (at least for now) location in downtown Toronto. And when we say film, we mean 8 - 16 - 35!!! We are talking about "Millimeter" baby!
What will be screened? In an effort to inject some variety into the rather pedestrian film calendar that Toronto has become complacent with, a team of eclectic pop culture cinephiles who are a little bit country and a little bit rock 'n roll, have been combing through lists of films from private collectors from the north and the south of this continent.
A rough guideline? If it a film that has been made in the last twenty years and by a big US studio, chances are you won't see it at PHANTA-SCOPE. That still leaves the playing field open for: horror; science fiction; fantasy; exploitation; “B†features; grindhouse and drive-in fare; mis-marketed and barely released obscurities; acknowledged cult items; twisted foreign art cinema; seventies black action movies; giallo murder mysteries; Italian westerns; misguided morality plays; women-in-prison films; juvenile delinquent; rock and roll rampages; psychotronic; kung fu massacres; mondo ..aries; “adults only†trench coat teasers; and generally cinema that was fallen between the cracks of mainstream cinema...
While we agree that they are masters, personally, PHANTA-SCOPE would be be ashamed to show Ingmar Bergman, Jean-Luc Godard, Mikio Naurse or Roberto Rosselini and would shove them out of the way for Roger Corman, Freddie Francis, Bob Clark (RIP), Sergio Corbucci or even Doris Wishman.
And of course, before the feature will be trailers of coming attractions, cartoons, news reels, educational films, home movies, scopitones and other film ephemera.
