How does a young mana struggling artist begin to live out his dreams and become a star? For years, Scar, like many aspiring songwriters and vocalists worked hard in the Atlanta music underground, writing songs, singing on every stage he could find, and searching for the answers to these questions. As an army brat that was born of love, Scar had a wide range of experience on his side: at the age of five he'd ridden the Tube across England and soaked in the melodies of the latest Britpop in the foggy morning air. When he moved back to the States, he lived the rest of his childhood days in Mississippi, and learned quickly to love the heavy thump of hip hop, the warm gurgle of old soul records, and the taste of soul food. With this colorful background, its no surprise that Scar's writing and singing are innovative in a way that only a true child of the world could understand,or a child out of this world, a musical legend with an undying hunger for cutting-edge music someone like Atlanta's very own, Big Boi.Back in 2003 with Outkast's "The Way U Move" and "Hey Ya" dominating the airwaves and television screens around the world, Big Boi took the time to take a ride in his Range Rover at 3:00 a.m. in the morning to listen to a demo of Scar's album "Scard 4 Life". And the rest is history. Within half an hour, he was calling the vice president of his newly established record label Purple Ribbon Records, calling his attorney, anyone he could get on the line, trying to sign Scar, and telling everyone he knew that the future of soul music had arrived. What a difference a day makes. Like most of us, Scar has definitely seen some good times like the day he was signed and lived through the bad. In 1996, he lost his cousin and brother in a car accident that left him with the internal and external markings from which he has taken his moniker. When asked about his stage name, Scar is at peace and surprisingly optimistic: "A scar is a strange and beautiful thing. Theres a story that goes with it. And a lesson. So its more than physicalits emotional, spiritual And its important to realize that scar's, and any painful experience can be flipped into sunshine, into blessings, into new ways of seeing the world...and that's what a great song is: a new, invigorating way of seeing the world."As a writer and vocalist, Scar proves this over and over again on his amazing debut album "Scard 4 Life". Through refreshing, infectious songs like "U Got Me!","Country Boy", "Just Ask Me", and "What Is This?", Scar stakes out exciting, new territory for hip-hop and R & B. And with raw, emotional tunes such as "Cry for Love", "Way to Go", "I Wanna Be Your Man", and "Love Ain't, Love Is", Scar proves that he is not scared or one-dimensional, that he can rock, sing timeless soul songs, and tell the truth even when it hurts. More than anything, like close associates Outkast, Scar proves that innovative music can feel good, that soul music is in need of a grand redefinition, and great songs can bang speakers, electrify crowds, pack dance floors, and still be positive.Influenced by artists such as Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Sam Cooke, Jodeci, Prince, and Boys II Men, Scar is certainly trying to push the limits of soul. I listen to everything from Young Jeezy and Van Hunt, to Bloc Party and Cody Chesnutt. "Im trying to take everything I grew up with and explore it all. Just make honest music." And in terms of Mississippi, Scar is out to prove that the state is larger than its history, bigger than cotton, grits, and a particularly dark past. "I'm proof that everything changes. From London to Mississippi, Im gonna light up the world with a fresh new sound."
