Emily Cook moved from London to Los Angeles in 1994 to work in the film industry. A chance meeting with David Klotz on a movie set led to the friendship that would eventually form the band Fonda.
Sharing an adoration for vintage keyboards and the musicals of French film director Jacques Demy (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg), they recorded the songs that would make up 1998's Music For Beginners CD-ep. Pressing only 1000 copies, Dave and Emily would spend their weekends driving to record stores to consign copies of the 5-song CD. Their hard work paid off with the help of KROQ's legendary DJ Rodney Bingenheimer who played the CD weekly making it the top 10 most requested song on his show. Fonda's breezy pop sensibility captured the hearts of indie-pop fans across the country as evidenced by selling nearly every copy of the EP within months of its release.
David Newton, a long time friend of the band and former member of Sire/Reprise artists, The Mighty Lemon Drops, joined Fonda after recording their debut album The Invisible Girl in his Burbank studio in 1999. With a host of close friends filling in on bass and drums, Fonda self-released the album in November 1999. It was embraced by college radio, peaking at ..39 on CMJ 200. Songs from the Invisible Girl would be released on compilations in Japan and used in various films and TV shows including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Roswell and a slew of indie films including "Down and Out with the Dolls"
After a brief tour, Fonda started work on their 2nd album for the Parasol Records in-house label, Hidden Agenda. Released in March of 2001, The Strange and The Familiar is a gorgeous collision of melodic indie-pop and gracious dreampop sonics punctuated by angelic female vocals. From the 60s girl group inspired opener Sun Keeps Shining On Me to the sparse melancholy beat of Cape May., Fondas Technicolor pop captured a whole new allegiance of fans including Los Angeles filmmaker/actor Ted Raimi who shot a video of Fondas jangly love song Close To Home
Soon after, Fonda's crafty pop sense caught the attention of Miramax Films, hiring the band to write, record and perform the end title song to Robert Rodriguez's 2001 summer hit movie, "Spy Kids". Fonda's catchy "Spy Kids" anthem appeared on the film's soundtrack and was released as a single in Europe. It received regular airplay on Disney radio and an accompanying video was shown on the Nickelodeon Network.
In keeping with the band's prolific momentum, Fonda started recording the follow-up to "The Strange and The Familiar". "Catching Up To The Future" was released in the Fall of 2003. And like the title of the opening track, the album is the sound of electric guitars: lush, crisp, crunchy and loud. Counteracted with Emily and Dave's cool, airy vocals, "Catching Up to the Future" was a great acheivement for the band musically and lyrically.
The members of Fonda are currently living and working in various corners of Los Angeles, California. They get together for wine tastings more frequently than they do to work on songs.
