I was raised in the Brooklyn town of Canarsie, the daughter of Ruth and Bruce and the twin sister of Karen. Music was always a regular part of my household, with my father playing one of his thousands of records any chance he could get or my grandmother playing the piano, which she helped teach me. As children, my sister and I had a constant need to create, both together and as individuals. I studied ballet for several years and it was my first love. Writing music began in college, inspired part by my sister and grandmother, part by the wonderful, free feeling I had when performing on stage, and mostly by the need to express what could not be spoken. My first vocal demo was recorded at WBCR, the Brooklyn College radio station after the suggestion of a friend. Then, as the result of pure will, determination, and relentless pursuit, I found myself clumsily learning chords on the guitar and learning to compose on the piano. My writing has been inspired by the sights and experiences of my life and the emotions that flow so deeply along with them. FLOWERS OF GOLD was self-released in January 2006, co-produced by Marcus Wolf and Phillip A. Jimenez, featuring tracks such as "Beautiful Girl" - about finding beauty in the self and "Better Days" - not giving up hope during the hard times. Tracks and live performances off the album have been featured at various radio stations including Z100FM (NY), WECS (CT), Sirius Satellite Radio, and multiple international podcasts with emphasis on Asia and Europe. Live performances include well known NYC venues such as The Bitter End, Southpaw, and The Cutting Room. When not in the studio, writing, or performing, I organize and direct concerts for the disabled in the NYC area and am a guest lecturer at Columbia University about Autism and the benefits of music in rehabilitation. Various notable charity performances include the 2006, 2007, and 2008 NYC Autism Walk, "Relay for Life" by the American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity, and Celebration Recovery for mental illness. I have danced as a member of the Omalay Dance Theater, performing at community events in NYC and Brooklyn and continue to dance whenever I get the chance. I also spend time in nature, as much as a Brooklyn girl can.
Album Reviews:
"Jennifer Richman is an independent singer/songwriter whose first CD, Flowers of Gold, was released in January 2006 without the help of a major studio. The music mostly straddles the line between folk-rock and light rock, with a bit of country thrown in. Jennifer's talent seems to mostly be found in the vocal and songwriting departments...Jennifer's vocals are very pleasant. The production quality is good, which isn't always the case for independent CDs. Jennifer's website has some snippets of her music, but to hear the songs in their entirety, you will have to purchase the CD." (Rambles.net)
“Jennifer Richman is a talented singer/songwriter with a soulful voice, clearly full of emotion.†(CDBaby)
"Jennifer has a sweet, soothing voice and has a way of simply expressing herself. It is no wonder why fans say they can relate to her songs." (Podfeeder)
"Remarkable songwriting and a gift for drawing you in with each word spoken. An amazing collection of pop rock songs for the masses." (Independents Only)
"It's as refreshingly vibrant as is it easy on the ears. Jennifer plays in a folk/pop style that showcases her clear, honey-dipped voice on songs that are crafted with great care." (Now on Tour)
